Something amazing happened on May 24th, 1976...

An English wine merchant, Steven Spurrier, was the owner of an innovative wine shop and adjacent wine school in the center of Paris. He had recently been introduced to California wines and he was curious to see how these newcomers would fare against French wines made from the same kind of grapes.  He decided to arrange a blind wine tasting in celebration of the American Bicentennial activities in Paris that year. The nine French tasters that were chosen for the event had impeccable professional credentials. Spurrier chose French wines that were first-growth (along with other classified-growth) red Bordeaux and white Burgundies.  These were matched against California Cabernet Sauvignons and Chardonnays. The tasting was blind, with the identities of the wines concealed and the labels revealed only after the jury of nine tasters had voted its order of preference. 

The unthinkable happened. The 1973 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon was judged the best. The Napa Cabernet had bested four top-ranked Bordeaux, including first-growths Château Mouton-Rothschild and Château Haut-Brion.  This single event, widely known as the "Judgement of Paris", changed the world's view of California wines forever.

This year Stag's Leap celebrates the 45th anniversary of this momentous occasion, and they have chosen Bentwater to host one of their anniversary tastings.  On Friday, February 26th, you will be the judge!  Join Stag's Leap Winemaker, Marcus Notaro, for a one-of-a-kind Virtual Vineyard Wine Tasting featuring four Stag's Leap wines, hand picked by Mr. Notaro himself.  A full bottle of each will come with your order, and will be paired with a wonderful charcuterie & cheese board creation by Bentwater's Certified Master Chef, Olivier Andreini.

3. Your wine order and charcuterie & cheese board will be ready for pick-up on February 26th between 12:00pm - 5:00 pm.  Tell us when you're on the way, by calling 936-597-2508, and we'll bring it to you curbside at the Clubhouse.  We do recommend that you open your bottles of wine 30 minutes before the event begins.

4.  At 6:00 pm, grab your phone, tablet, computer or laptop and join us live for a fun evening at the Virtual Vineyard!

If you need to cancel your order, please note that a 72-hour notice of cancellation (by calling 936-597-2508 or by email to [email protected]) is required prior to February 26th at 5:00pm, or 50% of the price of the event, plus tax, will be charged to your member account.
