March 2025 Club Newsletter
Dear Members,
As we welcome the warmth of Texas' beautiful spring days, golf, tennis, pickleball, and boating are set to replace many of the indoor activities we've enjoyed over the past few months. March marks the start of an action-packed spring season at Bentwater, with camps, clinics, outdoor dining events, and warm-weather activities waking from their winter slumber. And of course, some of the Club's most popular annual events are just around the corner, including the always-fun Bentwater Uncorked Spring Wine Fair. Hard to believe this will be the 7th annual Uncorked! Whether you're a wine connoisseur or simply enjoy a glass of fine wine every now and then, Uncorked is a fun Club tradition you won't want to miss. Full details and registration are available below.
March also brings new energy to our Racquet Club. In addition to their already vibrant spring event calendar, our Racquet Club community will soon be unveiling a brand-new pickleball court complex, adding even more excitement to the mix. To celebrate, Coaches George and Joseph have created an engaging beginner pickleball program that will introduce a whole new group of members to the game in the coming months. In fact, they've already signed up 34 new players in just the last 30 days! You'll find more about everything coming up for our tennis and pickleball groups in this month's newsletter.
Pickleball isn't the only sport seeing growth—golf has also seen a resurgence nationwide. The participation of 18 to 34-year-olds hit a near decade-high last year, and we're seeing this trend right here at Bentwater. Dave Troyer and his team have been hard at work developing new programs for players of all skill levels. Below, you'll find a range of opportunities, including private lessons, group clinics, camps, custom club fitting programs, playing opportunities, weekly competitions, and Club championships. 2025 is shaping up to be a fantastic year for our golf programs at both Bentwater and Grand Pines. Be sure to check out this month's Golf Club Newsletter for all the details.
I'd also like to take a moment this month to address one of the most common questions our staff receives throughout the year: "What is the 20% service charge for?" It's a great question, and you're certainly not alone in asking. While service charges aren't as common at publicly available restaurants, they are a standard practice at private clubs and resorts due to the unique service model we maintain between our relatively fixed membership base and the Club's dedicated staff. At Bentwater, the service charge plays an important role in ensuring we can retain and reward exceptional wait staff and bartenders. It enables us to offer a significantly higher wage compared to typical restaurants. While many local restaurants pay their wait staff between $2.15 and $3.00 per hour, we use the service charge to provide our team with an additional $12 to $15 per hour. For our members, the service charge essentially serves as the tip, so there's no need to tip beyond that. However, if you feel your server went above and beyond, and would like to leave an additional tip, it will go directly to that individual. I hope this information is useful, and as always, I'm happy to answer any other questions you may have about the Club.
As we transition into the warmer months, the Club calendar always seems to fill up faster and faster. The best way to stay on top of it all is by downloading the Bentwater Mobile App to your phone or tablet. It puts your Bentwater lifestyle right at your fingertips and keeps you up-to-date with everything the Club has to offer throughout the year. You can find it in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store for Android devices—just search for "Bentwater on Lake Conroe."
Thank you for being a part of this wonderful community, and I look forward to seeing you at the Club.
Warm regards,

Golf Club Newsletter - March 2025 - Dave Troyer, Director of Golf
Dear Members,

Spring is in the air, and with it comes the perfect time to hit the course! March brings longer days, warmer weather, and plenty of exciting events at Bentwater Country Club. Whether you're looking to sharpen your game, compete in tournaments, or simply enjoy a relaxing round with friends, we have something for every golfer this month.
Here is what you need to know from the Golf Department this month:
Respecting the Course: Golf Only Please
We take great pride in maintaining our beautiful golf courses for the enjoyment of all our members and guests. To ensure the best playing conditions and uphold safety for everyone, we kindly remind all members that the golf course is designated for golf only.
While we understand the appeal of the course's scenic beauty, it is important that walking, jogging, biking, and other recreational activities remain off the fairways, greens, and cart paths. The course is an active playing field with golf balls in motion, carts in use, and maintenance crews working throughout the day. Unintended foot traffic can cause damage to the turf, interfere with play, and, most importantly, create potential safety hazards.
For those looking to enjoy a leisurely walk, we encourage members to take advantage of designated walking paths and other club amenities. Our goal is to provide a premier golf experience while preserving the integrity of the course for all who come to play.
Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to keeping Bentwater a top-tier golfing destination. If you witness any unauthorized use of the golf course, please call the golf shop. We will be happy to send our Professional on Duty out to take care of any situation.

Tips & Tricks
After dismal putting performances in my last three golf rounds, I've reflected deeply on my putting skills. I used to be a phenomenal putter. It was the best part of my game and how I remained competitive through college and beyond. Now that I have gotten older and distance is a thing of the past, it is all the more important that my putting skills remain sharp.
As I thought about my own game, I remembered that great putting has nothing to do with size or strength, but requires time spent practicing developing feel. When I was playing competitively, I spent hours practicing putting drills, and one of the best drills out there to make more short putts is the Ladder Drill.
- Find a flat putt on the practice green.
- Put tees in the green at 1 foot, 2 feet, 3 feet, 4 feet, and 5 feet from the hole
- Begin the drill by making 3 putts in a row from 1 foot
- After making 3 in a row, move back to the next tee and try and make 3 more in a row from the 2-foot tee. Continue the routine until you make 3 in a row from the 5-foot tee
- Count the total putts it takes you to complete the ladder (A perfect score is 15). Keep track of the total putts each time you practice the drill, and over time you will begin to see your total number of putts dropping…. Both practicing the drill and on the course.
- For the hardcore players that really want to put in the time practicing, make the drill harder by having to start over at the 1-foot tee every time you miss a putt from any of the distances.
To get the best results, practice with purpose. Don't just hit putts aimlessly. Use your course routine for each putt. The more you practice this drill, the more putts you'll make on the course!

Rule of The Month
Rule 2.2 Defined Areas of the Course
Lately, I have heard the term "through the green" used a number of times by Members and thought it would be important to make sure everyone was on the same page regarding the correct terminology of the areas of the course.
Prior to 2019, the General Area was called "through the green". Part of the purpose of the 2019 rules update was to make the language of the Rules simpler and easier to understand. In doing so, they did away with some of the old archaic language like "through the green" and "rub of the green."
So now, "everything else" is called the General Area. It includes all fairways, rough and fringes of greens. It also includes any Teeing Area or putting green that is not part of the hole that you are playing. Practice greens are also considered part of the General Area.
2.2 Defined Areas of the Course
There are five areas of the course.
a. The General Area
The general area covers the entire course except for the four specific areas of the course described in Rule 2.2b.
It is called the "general area" because:
- It covers most of the course and is where a player's ball will most often be played until the ball reaches the putting green.
- It includes every type of ground and growing or attached objects found in that area, such as fairway, rough and trees.
b. The Four Specific Areas
Certain Rules apply specifically to the four areas of the course that are not in the general area:
- The teeing area the player must use in starting the hole they are playing (Rule 6.2),
- All penalty areas (Rule 17),
- All bunkers (Rule 12), and
- The putting green of the hole the player is playing (Rule 13).

If you have any questions or comments, please let me know at [email protected]. I would encourage everyone to download the USGA Rules of Golf App. It is a great way to learn and reference the rules of golf at any time.
Have a great month, and as always, remember to rake the traps, fill your divots, fix your ball marks, and post all your acceptable scores to GHIN. We look forward to seeing you at the Club!

Racquet Club Newsletter - March 2025
Exciting things are happening at the Bentwater Racquet Club! As we gear up for a bustling spring season of tennis and pickleball, we're thrilled to announce that the beautiful concrete slab for our new pickleball court complex has been poured—and it looks fantastic! This marks a major milestone in the project, setting the stage for the next phase, where you'll begin to see the complex take shape and come to life.
In the coming weeks, we can look forward to the installation of light poles, fixtures, fencing, and net posts. Simultaneously, the surrounding areas will be graded, landscaped, and enhanced with a new walkway and steps for easy access. Once the concrete has fully cured, the final court surfacing will be applied, bringing us one step closer to ushering in an exciting new chapter for our Racquet Club community.
I have no doubt that these courts will be among the finest in the Houston area. Our court builder shares this confidence and is documenting every step of the project with the intention of submitting it for award consideration.
With both our tennis and pickleball facilities returning to full operation, we're excited to announce several new programs, events, clinics, and playing opportunities for our members. You'll find details for all of it below. Make plans to join us!

BEGINNER & ADVANCED-BEGINNER PROGRAM
SATURDAY
MARCH 15TH
9:00 AM -10:30 AM
Coach Joseph here. Tennis Apprentice is the most successful beginner tennis program I've ever been involved in. This program is perfect for first-time players, those needing a reintroduction to the game, or those looking to improve their basic skills and tactics. The course is co-ed, so if you want to learn alongside your significant other, this is a perfect opportunity to do so.
The full program consists of six 90-minute sessions. The first three weeks of clinics will focus on stroke skills, followed by three weeks of step-up league, where you will play while I provide tactical tips and advice. The program will help you gain and sharpen your basic strokes and tactics. You can also get information on how to get involved in regular tennis play at Bentwater. The six-week course starts on March 15, and runs through April 19.
We have demo racquets available for use, so all you need to participate are comfortable sportswear and non-marking court shoes. While running shoes are not ideal for tennis, feel free to wear what you have, and I can guide you on appropriate tennis shoes.
The course is designed to be most effective if you can attend all six sessions. If you have a conflict on one date, you will be okay, but if you cannot make it to two or more sessions, please contact me so we can determine the best course of action for you.The cost for the entire six-week program is $120, which breaks down to only $20 per 90-minute class!
See you on the courts,
Joseph Mahaffey

Each round will consist of four games using no-ad scoring. If your court finishes the four games before others, play a tiebreak until they catch up. Rotate following each round during the two-hour session.
There is no fee for open play, but we ask that players bring their own gently used or new tennis balls for the session.

By now, nearly every Bentwater member has heard about the excitement surrounding pickleball. Many have already caught the bug, but if you haven't tried it yet and are eager to join the fastest-growing sport, we've created the Bentwater Pickleball Pathway to Success—a simple and effective way to get started.
The Pathway is a series of classes and clinics designed to guide players from having no experience to becoming league and tournament competitors. After completing each level of instruction, you'll have the choice to continue to the next level or pause at the skill level you're comfortable with. If a particular session doesn't fit your schedule, no worries—you can wait for a future session and progress at your own pace.
The February 1 "Intro to Pickleball" class was so popular that we added a second session, which also filled up immediately! Don't worry; we're offering the Intro to Pickleball class again on March 8th and April 5th (register below), followed by additional classes to build on your skills.
So, pick your Intro to Pickleball date below and start your journey on the Pathway to Pickleball Success!

Clean Courts
In order to keep the courts clean for the next member, please make it a habit to do a lap around the court before you leave and pick-up all tennis balls, personal items, and trash. You can place tennis balls in the bins located around the courts or take them to the Front Desk inside the Sports Club.
Ball Machine
When you are finished using the ball machine, please put all of the tennis balls back into the machine before putting the machine away. We recycle tennis balls and eventually donate them to local schools and animal shelters, so your effort here is greatly appreciated.
Racquet Club Etiquette
While on Racquet Club premises, during league matches or other official match play, whether it be tennis or Pickleball, please respect the players by switching all mobile devices to silent mode. Thank you.

Marina Newsletter - March 2025
March has arrived and the promise of warmer days is just ahead! This will be a busy month for the marina and we're excited to share some fantastic updates and reminders to help you make the most of your time on the water!
Exciting Upgrades
We are thrilled to announce that work is underway on the new decking for Docks 3 and 4! This project is a significant improvement, designed to enhance safety and aesthetics for all our marina visitors and slip holders. The new decking will provide increased durability and longevity for our docks. It will also give the entire area a clean new look and a visually appealing space to dock your boat and enjoy the waterfront. We appreciate your patience during this upgrade, as there will be workers coming and going over throughout the project. Construction vehicles and staged materials will be present, so we ask that everyone use caution when visiting the marina, taking special care to avoid restricted areas. If there are times during the project that access to your boat slip is limited, please come to the Ship Store for assistance and we will make arrangements, as necessary. We are confident that you will love the new look and feel of these docks!
Time for a Spring Clean

Golf Course Maintenance Newsletter - Turf Talk with Scott Terry - March 2025
Finally, March is here, and that always means better weather for golf. Soon the azaleas will be blooming, and the turf will start to show signs of life again. I hope your plants survived this year's cold season without issues.
Time for Fertilizer & Weed Control
As we transition into spring, our agronomy team is hard at work preparing the courses for the upcoming season. This month we begin our pre-emergent programs for summer weeds with a granular application in the fairways, tees, and green surrounds. We will continue with our roughs in a liquid form soon after. This is also a suitable time for you to make sure your lawns have protection from annoying crab and goosegrass by applying a good fertilizer and weed control. You may want to begin your lawn treatments sooner than later, as the weeds will often germinate when soil temperatures are around 55 degrees, which actually occurred a few weeks ago with the unseasonable weather we experienced.
Focusing on Playability & Aesthetics
With warmer weather on the horizon, we will begin prepping the greens on days when the courses are closed, which will include topdressing, grooming, and rolling to keep the grain and firmness at optimum levels and the surfaces smooth for the season ahead. Our tree program will also continue as we build on last year's momentum with a focus on the Miller course. As we move around the course, we'll be performing selective limbing and cleaning up the landscape to enhance both playability and aesthetics.
Improving Drainage
Drainage issues on the Weiskopf course continue to be identified and repaired. We're hoping the weather cooperates this month and allows access for our heavier equipment so that we can install additional drainage, as we were unlucky with wet fairways in February. We also have been probing our traps on the Weiskopf course, and we're excited to announce that a large order of premier white sand from Arkansas is on the way.
Enhancing Your Golf Experience
I'm looking forward to my first growing season at Bentwater. From mowing to course setup, and detailing, our goal this season is that you notice measurable improvements to the courses and that your golf experiences are enhanced by the programs we are implementing. Thanks for helping us by repairing your ball marks, filling your divots, and raking the bunkers. Your fellow competitors will surely appreciate your courtesy for detail.
I hope you have a fantastic March, and Thank You For Taking Care of Your Course!
