April 2025 Club Newsletter
Dear Members,
Spring is in full bloom, and I know we're all hoping the pollen storm is finally winding down! Today, the Club kicks off an exciting, action-packed month filled with events and activities for the whole family. Whether you're looking to pick up a new hobby or enjoy a longtime favorite, now is the perfect time to dive in—and the Club has everything you need to make it happen. A great way to explore something new is by taking a lesson with one of our pros. Whether it's golf, tennis, or pickleball, our team of experts offers both private and group clinics that will help you discover new activities and connect with a community that will elevate your membership experience.
If you're ready for an upgrade, our Membership team is here to help you find the perfect level for you and your family. There's no better time than now to try something new—let's make the most of this season together!
If you're a parent or grandparent, you know that summer vacation is just around the corner—and the kids are ready! No early mornings, no school, and plenty of sunshine to enjoy outdoor activities and swimming. Speaking of swimming, pool season is also underway, and the Club's pools are ready to go! During the off-season, we doubled the amount of furniture at the Sports Club Pool, replaced the furniture slings, added more umbrellas, and painted the pool deck, giving it a fresh new look and feel. At the Yacht Club, we are replacing the furniture slings there as well, setting the stage for another outstanding pool season that will take us all the way through another hot summer at Bentwater.
Keeping the kids entertained throughout the summer months can be challenging, which is why we're starting early with some of our junior programming. Be sure to check out the Golf Club newsletter below for details and registration for this summer's Junior Golf Camps. There are five sessions to choose from again this year, and now is the time to reserve your spot, as these camps can fill up fast!
The Club's social scene has plenty to enjoy as well! The Crescent Grille and Patio is the place to be throughout the spring. Here's what's happening in April:
-
Crawfish Boil on the Patio – 4/12
-
Dueling Pianos at the Yacht Club – 4/19
-
Easter Brunch – 4/20
-
Bingo Night – 4/25
-
Karaoke Night – 4/26
-
Up in Smoke BBQ Night – 4/30
It's going to be a month full of fun, food, and fantastic memories! You'll find full details in the Dining & Social newsletter below.
Finally, I want to take a moment to follow up on the frequently asked question I highlighted in last month's newsletter: "What is the 20% service charge for?" The service charge is essential for ensuring our hosts, wait staff, bartenders, Snack Bar attendants, and curbside staff are compensated more consistently for their hard work. The Service Charge allows us to offer more competitive rates to keep us in line with other clubs and restaurants in the area. It is also important to note that the service charge is paid exclusively to our Food & Beverage Front of House Staff and does not include anyone in a management position. Please know we do not want to discourage you from leaving an additional tip. If you feel you received exceptional service and choose to leave a tip beyond the 20% service charge, please know it will go directly to that individual. My hope is to clarify some open-ended questions from my last newsletter, but as always, feel free to reach out if you have any other questions!
Here's to a fun-filled spring at the Club—let's make the most of this beautiful season together!
Warm regards,

Golf Club Newsletter - April 2025 - Dave Troyer, Director of Golf
Dear Members,

April is here, and with it comes some of the best golfing conditions of the year! The days are getting longer, the weather is great, and the greens are rolling true—it's the perfect time to get out and play.
This month, we have a fantastic lineup of events and friendly reminders to keep your golf experience top-notch. Whether you're gearing up for a club tournament, looking to fine-tune your game with a lesson, or simply enjoying a relaxing round with friends, there's something for everyone.
In this issue, we'll cover exciting upcoming events, my Tips & Tricks for a better game, April's Rule of the Month, and actions we can all take to help keep our course in pristine condition as we move into peak season. Thank you for being a part of the Bentwater golf community—we appreciate your commitment to the game and the courses!
Here is what you need to know from the Golf Department this month:
Respecting the Course: Fill a Divot Month
For 2025, we have decided to start a new tradition and deem April as Fill A Divot Month as a way to celebrate everyone's commitment to maintaining the pristine beauty of our beloved golf courses. This month-long initiative isn't just about filling divots; it's about preserving the quality and integrity of our course for everyone to enjoy.
Why is filling divots so crucial? Well, aside from the aesthetic benefits of a smooth, flawless fairways, filled divots also ensure consistent playability for all golfers. A divot left unfilled can impact ball roll, alter shot trajectory, and even create hazards that affect the overall golfing experience. By taking a few seconds to fill a divot properly, you contribute to the long-term health of our courses and enhance the enjoyment for all players.
Here are a few tips to make sure you're doing your part effectively:
1. Be Prepared: Prior to your round, make sure your cart has at least 2 fully stocked bottles of sand. During the month of April, we will be placing a barrel of sand on the first tee of all three courses so that everyone has the opportunity to stock their sand bottles prior to teeing off. If you run out of sand during your round, all three courses have strategically placed areas where you can refill or change out empty sand bottles.
2. Proper Technique: Using the sand on your own cart, gently fill the divot, ensuring the mixture is level with the surrounding turf. Pat it down with your club or foot to blend it seamlessly into the fairway.
3. Awareness and Proactivity: Keep an eye out for divots, whether you're the one who made it or not. Take the initiative to fill any divots you come across during your round. It's a small effort that goes a long way.
4. Education and Encouragement: Spread the word! Let fellow golfers know the importance of filling divots. Encourage a culture of respect and responsibility towards our course. Together, we can ensure Bentwater remains a premier golf facility.
5. Celebrate Success: Share your efforts on social media using #FillADivotMonth and tag Bentwater Country Club. Let's showcase our collective dedication to course care and inspire others to do the same.
Both Members and Staff of Bentwater need to take pride in our courses. Let's make Fill a Divot Month a testament to our commitment to excellence. Whether you're a seasoned golfer or just starting out, your contribution matters. Let's keep Bentwater beautiful, one divot at a time.
Rule of the Month
Golf is a game of precision, patience, and, of course, the rules! One rule that often comes into play is USGA Rule 7.4, which addresses what happens if you accidentally move your ball while searching for it.
What Does Rule 7.4 Say?
Under Rule 7.4, if a player accidentally causes their ball to move while trying to find it, there is no penalty—but the ball must be replaced in its original or estimated spot.
This rule recognizes that searching for a ball, especially in thick grass, under leaves, or in tricky terrain, can sometimes lead to unintended movement. Rather than penalizing players for an honest mistake, the USGA allows the ball to be replaced without consequence.
How to Proceed If Your Ball Moves While Searching:
1. Acknowledge the Movement – If you (or anyone else searching) accidentally move the ball, don't panic! Simply note that it happened.
2. Estimate the Original Spot – If the exact location is unclear, use your best judgment to return it to where it was before moving.
3. Replace Without Penalty – You are not penalized, but you must ensure the ball is properly replaced before continuing play.
Why This Rule Matters:
Rule 7.4 is a great example of the USGA's commitment to fairness. Golf is hard enough without worrying about an accidental nudge while digging through the rough. By allowing
a free replacement, the rule ensures that players aren't unfairly penalized while still maintaining the integrity of the game.
So next time you're searching for your ball, remember—if it moves by accident, simply replace it and keep playing. No stress, no penalty, just golf the way it was meant to be played!
If you have any questions or comments, please let me know at dtroyer@bentwaterclub.com. I would encourage everyone to download the USGA Rules of Golf App. It is a great way to learn and reference the rules of golf at any time.
Tips & Tricks
Breathe, Relax, and Swing: The Key to a Smooth Golf Game
Golf is as much a mental game as it is a physical one. While mechanics, technique, and strategy are all important, one often-overlooked element of a great golf swing is relaxation. The ability to breathe properly, stay loose, and remove tension from your body can make all the difference between a fluid, powerful swing and one that feels forced or rigid.
The Role of Breathing in Your Swing:
Breathing is a natural way to control stress and tension, both on and off the golf course. Under pressure, many golfers unconsciously hold their breath or take shallow, rapid breaths. This can lead to tight muscles, reduced flexibility, and a rushed swing. Instead, focus on controlled breathing:
- Inhale slowly before your swing, allowing your body to stay loose and relaxed.
- Exhale as you start your downswing, promoting a smooth, tension-free motion.
- Use deep breathing between shots to reset your mind and stay focused.
Relaxation Leads to Better Performance:
When your muscles are tense, they don't move as freely. Tension often creeps into the hands, arms, and shoulders, restricting your swing and reducing clubhead speed. A relaxed grip and tension-free motion allow for a more natural, efficient swing.
To Stay Relaxed:
- Maintain a soft grip pressure (think of holding a tube of toothpaste without squeezing any out).
- Keep your shoulders and arms loose, allowing for better rotation and tempo.
- Develop a pre-shot routine that helps you stay calm, such as a deep breath before addressing the ball.
Let Go of Tension, Gain Consistency:
Some of the best players in the world emphasize the importance of relaxation. Jack Nicklaus once said, "A calm mind allows the body to function at its best." By reducing tension, you'll find greater rhythm in your swing, improved accuracy, and more consistency from shot to shot.
The next time you step onto the tee box, take a deep breath, relax your hands, and let your body move naturally. Your swing—and your scorecard—will thank you!

If you've spent time at the Fitness Center or Racquet Club lately, you've seen the beautiful new pickleball complex come to life. It's pretty exciting around here. The final details of the new court complex are coming together nicely, and soon we'll be able to announce a grand opening date along with our first events on the new courts. Stay tuned!

New Feature! Helpful Tip of the Month
This month, I'm introducing a new helpful tip section to the newsletter. Our first tip covers the Court Waitlist function in CourtReserve:
- On the Court Scheduler, you'll see a "Join Waitlist" button on the left.
- Clicking it brings up a "Join Waitlist" dialog box, where you can select court type, reservation type, and duration.
- Once saved, CourtReserve will send a notification if a cancellation matches your preferences, up to 2 hours before your requested time.
- Important: The reservation isn't automatic—you'll still need to register in CourtReserve once notified.
This is a great tool to help you get on the court, even if your preferred time was initially booked.
Looking forward to seeing you all on the courts soon!

As the name implies, open play is a recreational opportunity for ladies of all playing abilities. Simply register online and sign-in upon arrival. A member of the racquets staff will set the play schedule for the morning, and participants will rotate partners after each round.
Each round will consist of four games using no-ad scoring. If your court finishes the four games before others, play a tiebreak until they catch up. Rotate following each round during the two-hour session.
There is no fee for open play, but we ask that players bring their own gently used or new tennis balls for the session.

By now, nearly every Bentwater member has heard about the excitement surrounding pickleball. Many have already caught the bug, but if you haven't tried it yet and are eager to join the fastest-growing sport, we've created the Bentwater Pickleball Pathway to Success—a simple and effective way to get started.
The Pathway is a series of classes and clinics designed to guide players from having no experience to becoming league and tournament competitors. After completing each level of instruction, you'll have the choice to continue to the next level or pause at the skill level you're comfortable with. If a particular session doesn't fit your schedule, no worries—you can wait for a future session and progress at your own pace.
The February 1 "Intro to Pickleball" class was so popular that we added a second session, which also filled up immediately! Don't worry; we're offering the Intro to Pickleball class again on April 5th (register below), followed by additional classes to build on your skills.
So, pick your Intro to Pickleball date below and start your journey on the Pathway to Pickleball Success!

Clean Courts
In order to keep the courts clean for the next member, please make it a habit to do a lap around the court before you leave and pick-up all tennis balls, personal items, and trash. You can place tennis balls in the bins located around the courts or take them to the Front Desk inside the Sports Club.
Ball Machine
When you are finished using the ball machine, please put all of the tennis balls back into the machine before putting the machine away. We recycle tennis balls and eventually donate them to local schools and animal shelters, so your effort here is greatly appreciated.
Racquet Club Etiquette
While on Racquet Club premises, during league matches or other official match play, whether it be tennis or Pickleball, please respect the players by switching all mobile devices to silent mode. Thank you.
Thank You!!

Membership Q&A
Over the course of the spring and summer months each year, Bentwater welcomes many new property owners and members of the Club into our community. Many of the commonly asked questions our new members have involve the services, responsibilities, and function of the Bentwater Property Owners Association and Bentwater Yacht & Country Club. Here's a quick breakdown of the difference between the two:
The Property Owners Association (The POA: 936-597-5532)
- The POA is a separate and unaffiliated entity from Bentwater Yacht & Country Club. It has its own assessments that are unrelated to the Club.
- Bentwater property owners manage and control the operations of the POA and its sub-associations
- The POA facilitates the enforcement of all Covenants, Conditions, and Restrictions for each section within the neighborhood (the "Deed Restrictions")
- The POA maintains & manages the common areas within the neighborhood that are not owned by the Country Club, including:
- The Main Entrance and West Entrance facilities and staff
- The streets, esplanades, parks, and many of the power line easements
- The landscaped entrances, reserves, gates, and monument signs for the individual sections within the neighborhood
- The grassy shoulders of the streets, mailbox clusters, streetlights, and traffic signage
- The POA facilitates maintenance requirements for all unimproved homesites within the neighborhood
- The POA's Architectural Control Committee facilitates and manages the approval process for all improvements made to homesites and common areas within the neighborhood.
- The POA will host its own events throughout the year, such as:
- The 4th of July fireworks display
- Parades
- Recycling events
- Property owner meetings
- Voting locations
- The POA is who you contact when:
- You find a lost pet in the neighborhood
- You want to report tree or vegetation issues on a neighboring homesite that requires attention
- You have a guest that needs access through the Main or West Entrance
- You buy a new vehicle and need to register it for access through the gates
- You would like to make improvements to your homesite or home
- You have questions about Deed Restriction documents
Bentwater Yacht & Country Club (The Club: 936-597-6219)
- The Club is a privately owned entity that serves the members who own property within the neighborhood and their guests.
- The Club's Rules & Regulations document facilitates the responsibilities of the Club and its members.
- The Club has five membership levels to choose from:
- Grand
- Country Club
- Masters Golf
- Sports Club
- Social (the minimum required membership level)
- The Club owns and maintains the golf courses, clubhouses, swimming pools, marina facilities, and all other amenities offered by each membership level.
- The Country Club is who you contact when:
- You want to make a golf tee time, a dining reservation, a tennis or pickleball court reservation, lease a boat slip at the marina, or sign-up for a camp, clinic, class, or event at the Club.
- You want to report tree or vegetation issues on the golf courses or other Club owned property
- You want to upgrade your membership level and gain access to more Club privileges and amenities
I hope this information is helpful and answers some of the questions you might have as you navigate the robust lifestyle Bentwater offers.
Thank you for being a valued member of our club, and we look forward to seeing you on the course, in the gym, or at our next event. Happy Spring!
Warm Regards,
Kam Brewer

Marina Newsletter - April 2025
The boating season we've all been waiting for is finally here! That familiar Texas heat we know and love has already given us a sneak peak of the summer months ahead. If you haven't already taken your boat out of winter hibernation, now's the time to do it. We have at least seven glorious months of sunny days, gentle breezes, and warm waters waiting for us. But before you hit the open water and make the most of it, you'll want to get your boat in top shape and ready to go at a moments notice.
Remember that time last summer when you woke up to the perfect boating conditions, only to realize your boat was still covered in last season's dirt and debris? Or when you took on the task of cleaning your boat yourself and spent several precious hours messing with it instead of enjoying a day on the lake? We've all been there. But don't worry—our team at the marina has you covered. We offer top-notch boat detailing services to make sure your boat always looks pristine, no matter how much time you've spent cruising or fishing.
And here's a secret—now is the perfect time to sign up for our monthly detailing service plan. Imagine: No more worrying about when you'll get around to scrubbing the hull or wiping down the deck. With our Monthly Detail Plan, you'll enjoy a boat that's always ready for action—because we know the best moments on the water happen when you least expect them. You'll have more time for spontaneous adventures (and less time stressing over boat maintenance). Plus, you'll get a special discounted rate for signing up! It's like having a personal boat valet on call, and you get to keep your boat in tip-top shape all season long.
So, let's make this boating season effortless and fun—after all, the only thing better than being on the water is knowing your boat's ready to go when you need it!
Have a great month, and I'll see you at the Marina!

Golf Course Maintenance Newsletter - Turf Talk with Scott Terry - April 2025
Spring is in full swing, and our golf courses are starting to look like a golf course again! Trees are leafing out, the grass is waking up, and the pollen is in full force. Our pre-emergent fertilizer applications are complete, helping to keep summer weeds at bay, and we've begun our weekly sanding of the greens to smooth and firm the putting surfaces.
Drainage improvements continue on the Weiskopf course, while trimming on the Miller is nearing completion. These efforts not only enhance aesthetics but also improve air circulation and sunlight penetration. Additionally, our bunkers have been audited, sand depths adjusted, and 50 tons of Arkansas white bunker sand added to ensure consistency and playability. If you ever find yourself in a bunker needing sand, please feel free let us know what hole and bunker so it can be taken care of immediately. With several acres of bunkers and 50" of rainfall per year the sand can shift and with your help we can solve the issue quickly.
Corey and his team are hard at work addressing cart path edges by leveling drop-offs with soil and adding sod or pine straw as needed. Given the extent of the erosion, this will be a season long project. Also, some cart path work on the Miller will begin in the next few weeks to smooth out broken areas and provide a smooth, stable surface.
We appreciate your patience as we continue these improvements and look forward to another great season ahead! Have a great spring month and Thanks For Taking Care of Your Course.

Video of the Month
This month's video showcases an interesting tree replacement at TPC Sawgrass. The Houston based company, Environmental Design is the leading tree moving company in the country and has many accomplishments such as the planting of Ground Zero in New York City and the replacement of the famous cypress tree at Pebble Beach. I remember the original tree on #6 when I worked there in the late 90's. And for those of you who were here at Bentwater back in 2008, Environmental Design was the tree company that planted nearly 200 trees throughout our three golf courses and around the main clubhouse following a hurricane. It is so interesting to see what they can do with the newest practices. Hope you enjoy.
