January 2025 Club Newsletter
Dear Members,
Happy New Year! As we roll out of bed this morning and recover from a very fun New Year's Eve Bash last night, our hope is that this will be a happy and prosperous 2025 for you and your family. I want to begin by thanking you for making 2024 a fantastic year for the Club. Your enthusiastic support has set the stage for an even better year to come. As you know, over the past year the Club emailed experience surveys following events and activities that you participated in. Your feedback from these surveys was invaluable and became instrumental in our ability to improve services and craft new experiences. From our signature brunch events at Easter, Mother's Day, Thanksgiving, and Breakfast with Santa to our special Club traditions like the Member-Guest Golf Tournament, 4th of July, and Club Lighting Celebrations. The input you have provided us will help take your Club experience to new heights over the months to come. We have an action-packed year ahead, full of new opportunities for the entire family to get involved with. It all begins this month, and we can't wait to get started!
Before we jump into the good stuff below, I just wanted to remind everyone that the fastest, easiest way to stay up-to-date with everything the Club offers throughout the year is through your Bentwater.com account and the Club's Mobile App. As a Bentwater property owner and member of the Club, you'll want to stay informed by logging into Bentwater.com regularly. News and information on the very latest happenings around the Club are updated daily. You'll find everything from today's golf course conditions to the latest news on projects happening around the Club, to booking golf tee times, making dining reservations, registering for events, booking tennis & pickleball courts, viewing your current Club account statements, the membership directory, staff directory, and much more. If you haven't already, take a moment today to add the Bentwater Mobile App to your phone. It puts your Bentwater lifestyle in the palm of your hand. You'll find it in the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store for Androids. Just search for "Bentwater on Lake Conroe."
Thank you again for your continued support, and I hope to see you around the Club very soon.
Happy New Year,

Golf Club Newsletter - January 2025 - Dave Troyer, Director of Golf
Dear Members,
Welcome to 2025! As the calendar turns, we are thrilled to usher in a new year filled with memorable events, camaraderie, and, of course, fantastic golf. We hope the holiday season was joyful and that you're as eager as we are to kick off the new year.
Here is what you need to know from the Golf Department this month:
Frost Delays
As we navigate the winter months, frost delays can occasionally impact our course operations. To ensure the health of our greens and the quality of your golfing experience, we want to provide clear guidance on how frost delays will be handled this season.
What to Expect:
- When frost is present, play will be delayed until the course conditions are safe, and the frost has dissipated. This precaution protects the turf from damage that can occur when grass is walked or driven on while frozen.
- The golf team will monitor weather conditions closely each morning. Updates on delays will be communicated promptly via email and posted on the Course Conditions pages.
How You Can Stay Informed:
- Morning Alerts: Check your email or the Course Conditions page for updates before heading to the course.
- Golf Shop: Our staff will also be available by phone to answer any questions regarding frost delays.
Adjustments to Tee Times:
- Tee times affected by frost delays will be adjusted to accommodate all players. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to minimize disruptions.
Your cooperation helps ensure the long-term quality and playability of our courses.

Etiquette Tip of the Month
During the winter when the turfgrass is dormant, the golf course has no ability to heal from the damage that golfers cause. Therefore, it is extremely important to repair any and all divots when you are out playing golf. If you are unaware of how to properly repair a divot, here is USGA video explaining the correct procedure:
When you follow proper procedures for divot repair/replacement, you are playing a valuable role in maintaining a golf course's condition. We appreciate your cooperation.
Rule of The Month
While many players prefer Match Play over Stroke Play in competition, not everyone knows the rules can vary between the two types of competition. One of the big differences is the ability to concede strokes, holes, or matches in Match Play Competition. This year I had a couple of incidents arise that related to the matter of concession, so I thought it would be a good topic to cover at the end of the year.
Rule 3.2b. Match Play - Concessions
(1) Player May Concede Stroke, Hole or Match. A player may concede the opponent's next stroke, a hole or the match:
- Conceding Next Stroke. This is allowed any time before the opponent's next stroke is made.
- The opponent has then completed the hole with a score that includes that conceded stroke, and the ball may be removed by anyone.
- A concession made while the opponent's ball is still in motion after the previous stroke applies to the opponent's next stroke, unless the ball is holed (in which case the concession does not matter).
- The player may concede the opponent's next stroke by deflecting or stopping the opponent's ball in motion only if that is done specifically to concede the next stroke and only when there is no reasonable chance the ball can be holed.
- Conceding a Hole. This is allowed any time before the hole is completed (see Rule 6.5), including before the players start the hole.
A player and opponent are not allowed to agree to concede holes to each other for the purpose of shortening the match. If they do so, they are disqualified.
- Conceding the Match. This is allowed any time before the result of the match is decided (see Rules 3.2a(3) and (4)), including before the players start the match.
(2) How Concessions Are Made. A concession is made only when clearly communicated:
- This can be done either verbally or by an action that clearly shows the player's intent to concede the stroke, the hole or the match (such as making a gesture).
- If the opponent lifts their ball in breach of a Rule because of a reasonable misunderstanding that the player's statement or action was a concession of the next stroke, a hole or the match, there is no penalty and the ball must be replaced on its original spot (which if not known must be estimated) (see Rule 14.2).
A concession is final and cannot be declined or withdrawn.
If you have any questions or comments, please let me know at [email protected]. I would encourage everyone to download the USGA Rules of Golf App. It is a great way to learn and reference the rules of golf at any time.

Racquet Club Newsletter - January 2025
Look at what the new year brought us! By the time you read this, the Club's new pickleball facility will be well on its way. I want thank our Racquet Club community for your tremendous support of our programs and your passion for the sport that made this new amenity possible. I'm pleased to have played my part in bringing this much-needed and anticipated project to fruition, and I know we all greatly look forward to this fun new chapter for the Bentwater Racquet Club.
With our new pickleball facility now under construction, we have a few important "housekeeping" items this month:
- Monday–Friday: 12:00 PM–10:00 PM
- Saturday & Sunday: 6:00 AM–10:00 PM
When reserving pickleball courts:
- Pickleball Courts 1 & 2 correspond to Tennis Court 5.
- Pickleball Courts 3 & 4 correspond to Tennis Court 6.
- Ladies' Open Play: 12:00 PM (formerly 8:00 AM)
- Men's Open Play: 3:00–6:00 PM
George and Joseph will work to tape court lines and have them ready for play as soon as possible. On some mornings, these courts may still be booked for tennis until noon, so taping cannot begin before that time.
- Safety: Please respect areas cordoned off as construction zones, even if they appear safe. Construction debris may not always be visible, and restricted areas are meant to protect both you and the property.
- Parking: A portion of the parking lot will be designated as a staging area. Please avoid parking here to minimize delays for the construction crew and ensure your safety.
- Noise, Dust, and Mud: Construction can be noisy, messy, and always inconvenient. We will not delay the project to mitigate noise during tennis and pickleball play. Your understanding is greatly appreciated.
- Four additional pickleball courts with larger playing areas.
- Individual fencing for each court.
- Expanded viewing and rest areas.
- Modern LED court lighting for superior visibility.

Marina Newsletter - January 2025
Happy New Year! As we welcome 2025, we hope you had a joyful holiday season filled with laughter and warmth. At Bentwater Marina, we are excited to embark on another year of adventure, camaraderie, and, of course, boating! New Year, New Merchandise! To kick off the year, we are thrilled to announce the arrival of our new merchandise so stop by the Ship Store and check it out.
Winter Boat Safety Tips As we transition into winter, it's essential to prioritize safety while enjoying our beautiful lake. Here are some key tips to keep in mind:
1. Inspect Your Boat: Before heading out, check for any signs of wear and tear. Ensure that all safety equipment is in good condition. It's always a good idea to always keep your life vest on or at least within reach.
2. Stay Warm: Dress in layers and wear appropriate gear to protect against the cold. Don't forget gloves and hats!
3. Check Weather Conditions: Always be aware of the weather forecast. Conditions can change rapidly in winter, so plan accordingly.
4. Ensure Adequate Fuel: Cold temperatures can affect your engine's performance. Make sure you have enough fuel for your trip, plus a little extra for unexpected delays.
This is a very handy video for anyone who boats on Lake Conroe:
Finally, we've been really lucky so far with the warm winter weather. But don't let this weather fool you, a deep freeze can occur with very little notice this time of year. If you haven't winterized your boat yet, now is a good time. Feel free to stop by the Ship Store and get everything you need.
Have a great month and I look forward to serving you this year at the Bentwater Marina.

Golf Course Maintenance Newsletter - Turf Talk with Scott Terry - January 2025
Happy New Year! Hopefully, this will be a winter we avoid a historic freeze event. It seems Texas is the place where a weather event is categorized as historic most of the time. As we kick off 2025, here's what's happening around the courses this month:
Tree Removal and Trimming Projects
Continuing our momentum of improvements on the Weiskopf course from last year, we plan to move to the Miller course when the weather dictates, removing selected trees and trimming others. These changes will help increase sunlight penetration and air circulation across key areas of the course leading to healthier turf and better conditions throughout the season.
Drainage Improvements
Drainage work is underway on both courses to address homeowner runoff and help improve the overall turf conditions. These areas are crucial, not only for playability, but also for maintenance for our staff. The smoother the turf, the less wear on equipment. These upgrades in drainage will ensure better playing conditions daily. We are also ongoing with raising the sunken trenches on the Weiskopf from the previous irrigation renovation to provide much smoother surfaces.
Preparing for the Growing Season
Even though the winter weather slows down the course growth, our team is busy preparing equipment for the upcoming season. From mowers to aerators, everything is getting a tune-up to ensure we are ready for peak performance when the season arrives. Also working on backfilling rough areas in the pine straw on the Miller aiding in better cart transitions from fairway to the cart path.
Aerification Planning
Aerification will also be a focus as we prepare to maintain top-notch conditions throughout the year. This is a crucial practice that enhances root growth and improves soil health, setting the stage for vibrant turf. Planning now helps give us the best advantage to fully utilize the course closers for maximum results.
Winter Weed Control
Talking to our Agronomy staff members, it appears that the winter poa anna has been a problem in past years and due to resistance to current chemistry, it has been difficult to control. We will do our best to work on alternatives to lessen this obnoxious weed. One of the best ways to fight weeds is to have healthy turf. This is another reason aerification is such a necessary evil for our programs.
As We Look Ahead
Our team remains dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the courses for your enjoyment. From planned aeration schedules to new cultural practices, we are committed to providing top playing conditions while remaining mindful of sustainable practices. Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to another year of great golf and shared experiences on the course. Here's to a fantastic season ahead!
