May 2025 Club Newsletter
Dear Members,
There's no better place to kick off the summer season than right here at Bentwater. From golf and tennis to pickleball, fitness, and fun on the lake, May is one of the best times to enjoy our incredible community. Graduation is near, school's winding down, and summer schedules are filling up. Whether you're looking at swim lessons, Kamp Bentwater, Junior Golf Camps, or Junior Tennis & Pickleball Camps, the Club is your summer planning HQ. Don't miss our Summer Kickoff Pool Party on Saturday, May 24 at the Sports Club Pool, your one-stop-shop for summer programming. It's free, fun, and open to all! See details below in the Fitness Center newsletter.
Speaking of pools, May also means the return of pool season, and the ever-popular Snack Shack at the Sports Club Pool! Chef's new Snack Shack menu launches Memorial Day weekend, with daily service from 11 AM to 4 PM (closed on Mondays) and extended hours until 7 PM on Fridays and Saturdays. Regular Sports Club Pool hours are 9 AM – 9 PM, Tuesday–Sunday, with lap swimming from 7–8 AM. The Yacht Club Pool is also open daily 9 AM – 9 PM (closed on Wednesdays) for relaxing lakeside, without food & beverage service.
I want to thank everyone who joined us for Easter Brunch, it was a beautiful celebration. Now, it's Mom's turn! Mother's Day Brunch is Sunday, May 11th, and there's still time to reserve your table. Call the Club's Front Desk (936-597-6219) to inquire about available party size and reservation times. While you're at it, swing by Sanctuary Salon & Spa or the Golf Shop to pick up something special. The Golf Shop's Mother's Day Sale runs May 3rd - 11th, with great deals on ladies' apparel, shoes, golf bags, accessories, and more.
Finally, as summer approaches, I have a few friendly reminders to help ensure a safe, enjoyable Club experience for you, your family, and your guests:
- Although the golf courses seem like a reasonable place to walk for exercise, or walk your dog, this activity is strictly prohibited, as all golf facilities are reserved solely for golf. Your cooperation is very much appreciated. (See Rules & Regulations: Section 2.1-Facilities and 2.9-Pets for further details).
- All golfers, and their guests, must check in at the Golf Shop before every golf round.
- And with kids out and about during the summer months, let's stay alert and extra cautious on the roads, in the parking lots, and around Club facilities. Children under the appropriate age for the facility should not be left unattended in Club spaces. Your help will ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience this summer.
Have questions? Reach out anytime. I'm always happy to help. Looking forward to seeing you around the Club!
Warm regards,

Golf Club Newsletter - May 2025 - Dave Troyer, Director of Golf
As the warmth of May brings forth some of the best course conditions of the year, we are thrilled to share the latest from the Golf Operations Department. From exciting events to game improvement opportunities, this month promises to be a great month for every golfer at the Club.
In this issue, we'll cover the upcoming events, my Tips & Tricks for a better game, this month's USGA rule, and tips to help maintain a good pace of play. Thank you for being a part of the Bentwater golf community—we appreciate your commitment to the game and the course!
Here is what you need to know from the Golf Department this month:
Respecting the Course:
Pace of Play – Keeping the Game Enjoyable for Everyone
Pace of play is one of the most important elements of an enjoyable golf experience. At Bentwater, we want every round to be relaxed yet efficient, allowing all players to fully enjoy their time on the course without unnecessary delays. A good pace doesn't mean rushing—it means being ready, aware, and considerate of other groups.
Here's a closer look at why pace of play matters, and some helpful tips to keep your group moving:
Why Pace of Play Matters
- Respect for others: A slow group can delay everyone behind them, which can cause frustration and detract from the experience.
- Flow of the game: A steady pace helps players stay in rhythm, which can actually improve performance.
- Course operations: Keeping on schedule allows the golf staff to maintain smooth operations, including tee times and course maintenance.
Tips for Maintaining a Good Pace
1. Be Ready to Play
- While others in your group are hitting, prepare for your shot: choose your club, visualize your shot, and be ready to go when it's your turn.
- Consider using "ready golf" in casual play—whoever is ready hits first (safely), regardless of honor.
2. Keep It Moving Between Shots
- Walk briskly or drive directly to your ball.
- Drop off your partner at their ball when using a cart, rather than both going to each shot.
3. Limit Practice Swings
- A couple of practice swings are fine, but overdoing it slows down the round and adds little value to your game.
4. Watch Your Ball
- Pay attention to where your ball lands to avoid lengthy searches.
- If it's at risk of being lost, hit a provisional ball.
5. Be Efficient on the Green
- Read your putt while others are putting.
- Leave your clubs or cart on the exit side of the green so you can move on quickly after holing out.
6. Know When to Pick Up
- In a friendly round or scramble, if you're well over par on a hole, it's okay to pick up and move on to keep things moving.
7. Keep Up with the Group Ahead
- Your goal isn't just to stay ahead of the group behind—it's to keep pace with the group in front of you.
Let's Keep It Fun
Golf is a game of skill, etiquette, and camaraderie. Maintaining a good pace helps everyone enjoy their time on the course. At Bentwater, we appreciate your commitment to keeping the game moving—and keeping it fun—for everyone.
Rule of the Month
Rule 5.2 addresses when and where a player can practice on the course before or between rounds, with key differences between stroke play and match play.
In Stroke Play: What's Allowed and What's Not
What You Can't Do:
If you're playing in a stroke play competition, you may not practice on the competition course before your round on the day of the competition. This includes:
- Playing holes
- Hitting shots on any part of the course
- Practicing putts or chips on the course's greens or fairways
Doing so could lead to a two-stroke penalty or even disqualification, depending on the situation.
What You Can Do:
- You can use the designated practice areas (such as the range, practice green, or chipping area).
- On the day before the competition, you're allowed to play and practice on the course.
Between Rounds (Multi-Round Stroke Play Events)
If your event includes multiple rounds in one day, such as a 36-hole championship:
- You may not practice on the course between rounds unless the Committee allows it.
- Always check with the tournament or golf operations staff before hitting any shots between rounds.
In Match Play: More Flexibility
In match play, you are allowed to practice on the competition course before your round on the day of the match. However, this only applies before the match begins—not between holes or during the round.
How This Applies at Bentwater
At Bentwater, we host a wide range of events—from casual league play to formal club tournaments. When participating in a stroke play competition, be sure to follow Rule 5.2:
- Use our practice facilities before your tee time.
- Do not play or hit practice shots on the course the morning of the event.
If you're ever unsure whether an event is stroke play or match play—or whether a specific practice is permitted—just ask a member of our golf operations team. We're happy to help clarify and keep everyone on the right side of the rules.
Golf is a game of integrity, and understanding the rules helps preserve the fairness and spirit of competition. Rule 5.2 may seem small, but it plays a big role in ensuring an even playing field for all.
Let's keep the game fair and fun for everyone at Bentwater.
If you have any questions or comments, please let me know at [email protected]. I would encourage everyone to download the USGA Rules of Golf App. It is a great way to learn and reference the rules of golf at any time.
Tips & Tricks
Visualization: See It, Feel It, Trust It
One of the most effective tools in golf doesn't require a club or even a ball—it's your mind. Visualization, or mentally picturing your shot before you hit it, is a powerful technique used by professionals and amateurs alike to improve focus, boost confidence, and enhance performance.
At Bentwater, we believe in the mental side of golf just as much as the physical, and visualization is a simple habit that can elevate your game.
What Is Visualization in Golf?
Visualization is the process of mentally rehearsing your golf shot before you take it. This includes imagining the trajectory, ball flight, landing spot, and even the feel of the swing. It's like creating a blueprint for your shot—and then following it.
How to Visualize Your Shot: Step-by-Step
1. Assess the Shot
Before you picture the shot, take in the real-world details:
- Distance to the target
- Wind conditions
- Elevation changes
- Hazards and landing areas
2. Pick a Specific Target
Don't just aim for the fairway—aim for a spot in the fairway. Choose a leaf, a tree branch, or a corner of the green. The more specific your target, the more focused your visualization.
3. Create the Image
Close your eyes briefly or soften your focus, and mentally watch the entire shot unfold:
- See the swing
- Feel the strike
- Watch the ball launch, fly, and land exactly where you want it
4. Commit and Swing: Trust It
With a clear mental image in place, step up to the ball with confidence and make your swing match the shot you just saw.
Benefits of Visualization
- Improved Focus
Visualization narrows your attention to a specific goal, blocking out distractions and negative thoughts.
- Increased Confidence
Seeing a successful shot in your mind helps build the belief that you can actually make it happen.
- Better Consistency
When your mind and body are aligned, your swing becomes more repeatable and intentional.
- Mental Resilience
After a bad shot or rough hole, visualization helps reset your mindset and focus on the next opportunity.
PGA and LPGA professionals use visualization before nearly every shot—especially under pressure. SEE IT, FEEL IT, TRUST IT (SFT) If it works for them, it can work for you. Start incorporating visualization into your pre-shot routine and notice the difference it makes in your confidence and execution.

Each round will consist of four games using no-ad scoring. If your court finishes the four games before others, play a tiebreak until they catch up. Rotate following each round during the two-hour session.
There is no fee for open play, but we ask that players bring their own gently used or new tennis balls for the session.
Bunny Bash Racquets Mixer Recap
Twenty-four enthusiastic tennis and pickleball players hopped into action at the Bunny Bash on April 11th! Players were greeted by none other than the Racquets Bunny himself, setting the tone for a fun-filled day. Smashes, dinks, laughs, and drinks were shared by all in a festive spirit of play and community.
Missed this one? Don't worry—our next social mixer is coming soon, the June "Hotter-than-Heck Mixer & Pool Party!" Details will be out shortly—don't miss the fun!

FROM THE RACQUET CLUB
Clean Courts
In order to keep the courts clean for the next member, please make it a habit to do a lap around the court before you leave and pick-up all tennis balls, personal items, and trash. You can place tennis balls in the bins located around the courts or take them to the Front Desk inside the Sports Club.
Ball Machine
When you are finished using the ball machine, please put all of the tennis balls back into the machine before putting the machine away. We recycle tennis balls and eventually donate them to local schools and animal shelters, so your effort here is greatly appreciated.
Racquet Club Etiquette
While on Racquet Club premises, during league matches or other official match play, whether it be tennis or Pickleball, please respect the players by switching all mobile devices to silent mode. Thank you.
Thank You!!

Marina Newsletter - May 2025
May is a time of blooming flowers, warm sunshine, and the perfect opportunity to get your boat ship shape for the upcoming summer adventures. As we kickoff the warm summer months, our team at the Bentwater Marina is excited to celebrate this boating season with you!
Whether you're planning a peaceful day of fishing, a fun family outing, or a romantic sunset cruise, this is a fantastic time of the year to enjoy Lake Conroe. As you prepare for your outings, be sure to schedule one of our thorough boat cleanings. Many of you will be taking your boat out this month for the first time since last fall, and your boat deserves some TLC! Our detailing services will ensure your boat shines bright and stays ready all summer long.
Why Schedule a Detailing?
- Protect your investment with proper cleaning and maintenance.
- A clean boat is a happy boat owner.
- When someone is cleaning and getting an eye on the little details of your boat, it's much more likely that routine problems and issues can be "heading off at the pass", resulting in a much more comfortable experience out on the water.
Let's get the most out of your boat ownership this month, and all summer long! We invite you to visit us at Bentwater Marina, enjoy the beautiful scenery, and take advantage of our services. Here's to a month filled with sunshine, laughter, and unforgettable memories on the water!
Wishing you smooth sailing and sunny days.

Golf Course Maintenance Newsletter - Turf Talk with Scott Terry - May 2025
Spring is in full bloom, and the courses are really starting to green up nicely. The greens are getting dialed in, and we're setting the stage for a strong summer season ahead.
Cart path repairs have been completed, improving access throughout the course. Tree work on the Miller course is winding down, and we are shifting our focus to mowing, detailing, and fine-tuning the irrigation system. These adjustments are key to maintaining firm, healthy playing conditions as we move into the warmer months.
Please note that the Miller course will be closed for aerification starting May 27 and will reopen on June 7th. We appreciate your patience during this essential maintenance period—it's all part of keeping the course in top shape. During this process we will be aerating the greens, tees, collars, approaches, and fairways. While this is going on, a separate operator will be slicing the roughs to help with compaction and provide the airspace needed for water and nutrients. This process will be similar on the Weiskopf course, June 16-27.
A big thank you to Dave and his staff for launching April Divot Month. Taking care of the course ensures it's enjoyable and playable for everyone. Let's all do our part by filling a few divots, repairing your ball marks, and raking your bunker tracks. I remember a quote by a fellow mentor who said, "Good course conditions don't happen by accident." Have a great Memorial Day month, and Thanks For Taking Care of Your Course.
