November 2024 Club Newsletter
Dear Members,
If you felt like summer hung around a little too long this year, you're not alone. But I'm here with good news; it is in fact November, and it will cool down eventually. This is often one of the most beautiful months of the year to enjoy the outdoors. Whether it's tennis, pickleball, golf, or just a walk with a friend, be sure to take full advantage of this special time of the year. The holidays are approaching, and if you've been around Bentwater for a while, you know this is also a season filled with great Club traditions. From our robust schedule of golf, tennis, and pickleball events, clinics, and competitions to our long-standing family traditions, like Thanksgiving Day Brunch, Turkeys To-Go, and the Club Lighting festivities, November is an action-packed month the whole family will enjoy, and we can't wait to get started. So, let's go!
As I sit down to write this newsletter, I can't help but notice out my window the many workers putting up Christmas lights in all of the trees and shrubs around the Club. It's just another reminder that things are about to get really fun around here. As you read through this month's newsletter, you'll find full details on all upcoming events and activities, and you'll want to be sure to make your reservations early as things tend to fill up a little faster this time of year.
When you think of November, what do most people think about first? Thanksgiving, football, family gatherings, the Macy's Parade, the dog show? If you're the Club's Executive Chef, it's the Thanksgiving Day Brunch buffet menu. He has visions day and night of herb-roasted whole turkey carving stations and candied sweet potato casseroles dancing in his head like sugar plums. If you haven't already seen this year's menu, you're in for a treat. You'll find it in the Dining & Social newsletter below. Thanksgiving Day brunch is a great Bentwater family tradition and one that you never want to miss. Gather the family and reserve your table today!
For those of you hosting Thanksgiving at your home this year, Turkeys To-Go is the way to go. It's a chef-prepared Thanksgiving feast complete with succulent, juicy, whole roasted turkeys and a wide variety of your favorite Thanksgiving side dishes and desserts, all prepared and ready to serve just in time for the big day. It's so convenient, and it makes Thanksgiving with the family as easy as pumpkin pie. The Order Form is posted in the Dining & Social newsletter below, and you can submit your orders to the Club's Front Desk or by emailing [email protected], through Wednesday, November 20th, at 2:00 pm.
Finally, it wouldn't be the holiday season without a proper celebration to usher in the occasion. Just two days after Thanksgiving, the Club will host one of its great annual family traditions that signifies the beginning of the holidays. We kick things off with a spectacular Club Lighting Buffet from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., while outside the Country Club grounds will be transformed into a winter wonderland of fun, featuring hayrides, camel rides, ornament crafts, 3-in-1 Sports Zone inflatable, Elf on the Shelf inflatable, the Grinch (boooo!!), letters to Santa, face painting, balloon artists, Christmas cookie decorating, hot chocolate, s'mores, festive holiday music, and, of course, an appearance by the man himself, Santa Claus! The real spectacle of the evening, however, is the spectacular Christmas lights! It's a great way to celebrate the season and create lifelong memories with your family. Make your reservations today for the Club Lighting Buffet and bring the whole family for a really fun evening at the Club. Full details, buffet reservations, and the delicious menu are found at the link shown below.
We hope you enjoy this month's Club Newsletter, and we wish you a happy and safe November. I look forward to seeing you at the Club.
Respectfully,

Dining & Social Newsletter - November 2024 - Trung Nguyen, Director of Food & Beverage
Wow! What an action-packed fall this has been at the Club. Last month's Member-Guest tournament was a huge success. I want to thank everyone who participated and helped to make it one of the best Bentwater has ever hosted. Our dining & social event calendar just keeps getting better as the holiday season approaches. For many, November is the most exciting month of the year at the Club, and this year is no exception. The next 30 days will offer a wide variety of your favorite Club events for the entire family to enjoy. From our new Thursday & Sunday Night Football Specials to Taco Tuesdays, Taste of Asia, Fajitas & 'Ritas, Creole Night, Live Music Night, Thanksgiving Day Brunch, and the Club Lighting celebration, there won't be dull moment.
The Club's signature annual events don't get any bigger than the two we have at the end of the month. Thanksgiving Day Brunch and Club Lighting are long-standing holiday traditions for so many Bentwater families and really signify the beginning of the holidays. If you haven't experienced the amazing bounty of a Thanksgiving Day Brunch at Bentwater, you're in for a truly special occasion. It makes Thanksgiving Day so pleasant. Your only responsibilities for the day are to spend time with family and friends, watch the parade, catch a good football game and enjoy an incredible Thanksgiving feast at the Club. Full details, the incredible buffet menu, and reservations can be found by clicking on the link shown below.
Just two days after Thanksgiving, our annual Club Lighting festivities officially usher in the holiday season. The evening kicks-off at 5:00pm with a fantastic buffet dinner in the Magnolia Room, while outside the Country Club grounds transform into a winter wonderland filled with festive activities, sweet treats, holiday music, and of course a visit by the man himself, Santa Claus! The festivities all lead up to the dramatic Club Lighting itself as we kick-off the holiday season in style.
Finally, it wouldn't be November in Bentwater without Turkeys-To-Go! Talk about a convenient, hassle-free way to feed your family & guests a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner at home. The incredible menu of Thanksgiving favorites offers a complete, made-to-order feast, prepared by Executive Chef Benito Gavirio, and conveniently ready just in time for the big day. Your guests will be amazed at how clean your kitchen is on Thanksgiving Day! The Order Form and full details are found at the link shown below.
We'll see you at the Club!

Golf Club Newsletter - November 2024 - Dave Troyer, Director of Golf

Country Club – Saturday, December 7th from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm
Handicap Committee
There has been a lot of talk about Cap Patrol recently and the Handicap Committee wanted to let everyone know that it is not a bad thing if your Cap Score falls below 50 and you receive a Cap Patrol notification. All it means is that over the last 12-24 months you have demonstrated the potential to play better in competition than your current index reflects.
Cap Patrol is an automated peer review system that applies the same objective criteria to every member of the Club on a daily basis. It removes subjective hearsay and human emotion from the peer review process, which Handicap Committees have had to rely on in the past in order to trigger the peer review process. In essence, Cap Patrol has removed the negative stigma of being "targeted" by the Handicap Committee based on gossip or a belief that certain individuals are purposely manipulating their handicap index.
An individual's Cap Score can fall below 50 for many different reasons including, but not limited to the following:
- An individual's index calculated from only posted competition scores is lower than their current index based on all posted scores.
- An individual's low index over the last 12 months is significantly lower than their current index
- An individual's current index has increased significantly over the last 12-24 months
- An individual has posted an exceptional score in competition
- An individual has finished in the top 3 in tracked competitions more often than expected over the last 24 months
Cap Scores can change on a daily basis based on how much an individual is playing and posting scores. If an individual receives the notification below, it means their Cap Score was below 50 on the day the notifications get sent out and their score may rise above 50 before their next competition.
So rest assured that if you do receive the following notification, by no means does it mean that you are a bad person who is purposely manipulating their handicap index. All it means is that you have demonstrated the ability to play better in competition than your current index reflects.
Notification Example:
Good Afternoon Mr. / Mrs. Member,
With the institution of Cap Patrol to determine Competition Indexes, players with a Cap Score under 50 are now required to play to their Cap Patrol Index in all Club tournaments. Your current Cap Score is X.
Your current index is X, and your current Cap Patrol Competition Index is X. Please be aware that you will be playing to your Cap Patrol Competition Index during any competition you participate in while your Cap Score remains below 50.
Having the Competition Index applied is not a bad thing. It simply means that you have demonstrated the ability to perform better in competition than your current index reflects. If you have any questions, or if you feel that your Cap Patrol Competition Index is not reflective of your demonstrated potential during the previous 12-24 months due to injury or another unforeseen circumstance, please feel free to contact the Handicap Committee at [email protected].
Sincerely,
The Handicap Committee
* Please note that Cap Scores can change daily. The notification above may not hold true by the time of your next competition at Bentwater. Feel free to email the committee to inquire about your current Cap Score and Competition Index.
Rule of the Month
Rule 16 – Relief from Abnormal Course Conditions
This month, we focus on USGA Rule 16, which covers relief from abnormal course conditions such as immovable obstructions, ground under repair, animal holes, and temporary water. Understanding how to properly take relief can save you strokes and
keep your round running smoothly, especially during the fall and winter months when course conditions can be less than ideal.
What is an Abnormal Course Condition?
An abnormal course condition refers to any of the following:
- Ground under repair: Defined areas of the course that the grounds crew has marked for repair. These areas may be identified by white lines or signage.
- Temporary water: Water accumulation on the course not in a penalty area (e.g., puddles after a heavy rain).
- Animal holes: Any damage caused by burrowing animals like gophers or rabbits.
- Immovable obstructions: Structures or objects that cannot be moved, such as sprinkler heads, cart paths, or permanent signage.
How to Take Relief Under Rule 16
When your ball or stance is affected by an abnormal course condition, you're entitled to free relief (no penalty) as long as the condition interferes with your stance, swing, or where the ball lies.
Steps for Taking Relief:
- Identify the nearest point of complete relief: This is the spot where you are no longer affected by the abnormal condition. It must be the closest point, not necessarily the most convenient, and must still be on the same part of the course (e.g., not in a bunker if your ball was in the fairway).
- Drop within one club length: Once you've found the nearest point of relief, you are allowed to drop your ball within one club length of that spot, no closer to the hole. Ensure the ball is dropped correctly, from knee height, as per the 2019 rule changes.
- No penalty applies: As long as you follow the proper procedure, there's no penalty for taking relief from an abnormal course condition.
Relief in a Bunker or Penalty Area:
If your ball is in a bunker and an abnormal condition affects your stance or swing, you are still entitled to free relief. However, you must drop the ball inside the bunker. If no complete relief is possible within the bunker, you can take a one-stroke penalty and drop the ball outside the bunker.
If your ball is in a penalty area, you're not entitled to free relief from abnormal conditions unless there is a local rule in place. If the condition is unplayable, you can take penalty relief following the standard procedures under Rule 17.
Important Notes on Rule 16:
- Player Responsibility: It's up to the player to determine if an abnormal course condition is affecting their play. Be sure to consult with your playing partners if you're uncertain, or seek a ruling from the committee if available.
- Embedded Ball Relief: Embedded ball relief is available in the general area (through the green), but not in bunkers or penalty areas, unless local rules state otherwise.
- No Relief from Boundary Fences: If your ball is near an out-of-bounds fence or wall, it's considered part of the boundary, and no relief is provided.
When in Doubt – Play Two Balls
If you're unsure about whether you're entitled to relief or how to proceed under Rule 16, you can play two balls under Rule 20.1c(3)—one as you believe the rule allows and the other from an alternate spot—and seek a ruling after the round. Make sure to declare this to your playing partners before proceeding.
By understanding and applying Rule 16, you can confidently handle abnormal conditions on the course, ensuring your game stays fair and enjoyable. Whether it's relief from a waterlogged area or an immovable obstruction, knowing your rights as a player can prevent unnecessary penalties and keep your round on track.
For further details or questions about the rules, visit USGA.org.
If you have any questions or comments, please let me know at [email protected]. I would encourage everyone to download the USGA Rules of Golf App. It is a great way to learn and reference the rules of golf at any time.

Racquet Club Newsletter - November 2024
As I write this month's newsletter, some beautiful fall weather has finally arrived. The cooler fall days are perfect for enjoying both tennis and pickleball, so we hope to see you out on the courts this season.
Our calendar year is winding down with both the North Country Women's Tennis League and North Houston Interclub Pickleball League finishing their fall seasons. They will begin spring season play in January and February. We currently have 6 NCWTL teams and 3 NHIPL teams at various levels of play. These teams are always looking for new players, so if you have some competitive experience and are interested in joining, please contact me. I can connect you with our team captains to begin the process.
Also, look for more details in this newsletter regarding our Annual Turkey Classic Tennis & Pickleball Mixer. This is always a popular, fun event, so be sure to register early to secure your spot!
Lastly, although our tennis/pickleball shop is limited in size, we do offer better-than-internet pricing on our goods. Tennis racquets and pickleball paddles are typically priced 10% lower than you'll find elsewhere. We currently have several racquets and paddles with even deeper discounts, so stop by when you get a chance.

2024 Racquet Club Event Calendar
November 16th: Turkey Classic Tennis & Pickleball Mixer
December 7th: Ugly Sweater Racquets Mixer
November 16th | 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Tennis and pickleball players rejoice, for an afternoon of social play, music, snacks, and plenty of laughs await! This will be an especially joyous occasion as the highly respected Great Turkey will be making a special appearance!
The play format will consist of multiple timed rounds of rotating partner doubles play. If you register with your spouse or a friend, we will pair you together for the first round, but partners will be mixed up for subsequent rounds. One of our goals at these social mixers is to get to know other members, and this is a great way to do so.
Between rounds, we'll take breaks to socialize and refresh. A member pay beer and wine bar will be available as well.
The entry fee for the event is $10 per player, which includes non-alcoholic beverages and snacks. Register on the Bentwater CourtReserve portal.
BENTWATER | WALDEN | APRIL SOUND | THE WOODLANDS
Nov 7th & Dec 5th
6:00 pm
The Men's Interclub Mixers are a collaboration between Bentwater, Walden, April Sound, and The Woodlands Country Clubs. Our first match, hosting April Sound at Bentwater, was a great success. I invite both those who participated in the September 5th match and those who couldn't make it to join us on October 3 at Walden. There is no fee for our players for this event, as Walden is hosting.
The season will conclude with a party at The Woodlands Country Club in December, where all four clubs will compete that evening.
You can register online for any or all of the upcoming matches. Pro staff from each club will be on-site to facilitate matchups for the evening. We will accept the first 12 entrants for both tennis and pickleball, with a waitlist if spots fill up.
There is a $5 fee per player for home matches only. When we visit other clubs, there is no entry fee. You can register up to a month in advance on CourtReserve. No need to find a partner in advance; you will be paired on the night of play.
Ladies Tennis Open Play
Saturday Mornings
8:30 am - 10:30 am
The Racquet Club
The recurring Ladies Tennis Open Play continues in November, with meetings every Saturday morning at 8:30 am. As the name implies, open play is a recreational opportunity for ladies of all playing abilities. Simply register online and sign-in upon arrival. A member of the racquets staff will set the play schedule for the morning, and participants will rotate partners after each round.
Each round will consist of four games using no-ad scoring. If your court finishes the four games before others, play a tiebreak until they catch up. Rotate following each round during the two-hour session.
There is no fee for open play, but we ask that players bring their own gently used or new tennis balls for the session.
A Look Back at October...
On October 12, our 8-man, 8-woman team competed in the 2025 Conroe Cup (tennis). We fielded a strong and competitive team again this year, and although we did not bring home the cup, we played some great tennis and demonstrated our competitive spirit to April Sound, Walden, and The Woodlands.
Due to playing at two separate locations this year, I was unable to get a team picture, but I want to extend a big thank you to all participants for your efforts and sportsmanship.

Clean Courts
In order to keep the courts clean for the next member, please make it a habit to do a lap around the court before you leave and pick-up all tennis balls, personal items, and trash. You can place tennis balls in the bins located around the courts or take them to the Front Desk inside the Sports Club.
Ball Machine
When you are finished using the ball machine, please put all of the tennis balls back into the machine before putting the machine away. We recycle tennis balls and eventually donate them to local schools and animal shelters, so your effort here is greatly appreciated.

While on Racquet Club premises, during league matches or other official match play, whether it be tennis or Pickleball, please respect the players by switching all mobile devices to silent mode. Thank you.

Fitness Center Newsletter - November 2024
FITNESS CENTER
November 2024
The holiday season is about to begin, along with all of the fun traditions we enjoy. And although each of us celebrates this time of the year in our own way, there's one common element that seems to affect all of us this time of year... comfort food. It's a delicious trap for many of us and seems to be staring us in the face everywhere we go between now and the end of the year. So, this month we're going to simply embrace the situation and face it head on. We should always practice portion control, but let's not deprive ourselves completely. Instead, we'll focus on burning off some of those calories with something that every Sports Club, Masters, Country Club, and Grand Pines member has in common... group fitness. In particular, our early morning group fitness classes.
The Fitness Center's early morning classes help to ignite your metabolism and burn those pesky holiday calories throughout the entire day. They also build and tone muscle that assists in keeping your metabolism elevated for longer. Finally, each of our early morning classes include a cool-down session with stretching. This will help reduce achiness and keep you moving freely all day long.
Here's a little more detail on the benefits that our early morning classes offer:
INCREASES MUSCLE MASS
Muscle is built with a combination of a healthy diet and repetitive motion under strain. Your muscles grow because this strain causes painless micro-tears in your muscle tissue that your body naturally repairs. As your muscle fibers repair, they get stronger - kind of like a callous - and create stronger muscle groups over time. Each of our early morning classes utilize some form of weight or resistance to add just the right amount of strain and target specific muscle groups.
BURNS FAT
When done in a caloric deficit, all workouts begin to burn fat on your body. Your body converts this fat into energy and uses it to fuel your body from start to finish. Our early morning classes keep you moving, grooving, and burning calories long after the class ends.
TONES & SHAPES
Each class is designed to target important muscle groups in your body. These targeted workouts, when done with the right number of reps and proper resistance, can help tone the muscles in the areas of your body you're looking to target. This helps to keep you looking lean in all the right places and add muscle volume where desired.
STRENGTHENS YOUR CORE & IMPROVES YOUR POSTURE
Poor posture affects people who work desk jobs, work with their hands, and spend time bending over to work. This arching back and shoulders can lead to aches and pains over time, which is why it's a great idea to focus on improving your posture. By strengthening your back, shoulder, and abdominals, you'll have the muscular strength capable of supporting your body properly. Additionally, when guided to work out with proper form, that inspiration can rub off into your daily life practice -- meaning no more office hunchback look for you!
WORKS OUT THE ACHES & PAINS
The more you move, the more blood pumps to different parts of your body, relieving & repairing your aches and pains.
LEAVES YOU WANTING MORE!
One of the best things about an early morning workout is that it gives you a boost of energy that lasts all day and keeps you ready for anything else that comes your way.
So be sure to give one of our great early morning classes a try this month. You might just discover that you're an early bird after all!
Have a great month and we'll see you at the Club!

Marina Newsletter - November 2024
November is always a bittersweet month for Lake Conroe's boating community. On one hand, we're excited about cool weather and the coming holiday season, and on the other hand, it typically means the dreaded off-season has arrived. For many, this time of year means putting our beloved boats and watercraft to rest until spring. If you've been through a few off seasons with your boat, one thing is for sure: when spring does arrive and you peel that cover back for the first spring cleaning, it's really nice to see an interior that doesn't need a whole lot of attention. We can help with that! Stop by the Ship Store, give us a call, or send us an email to schedule a deep clean before putting your boat to bed this winter. Our thorough detailing services include:
- Cleaning the cover inside and out
- Vacuuming out compartments and carpets
- Wiping down the seats with upholstery cleaner and aftercare products
- Scrubbing all glass with a high-strength non-scratching glass cleaner
- Soaping and scrubbing the exterior to remove heavy bug and dirt buildup
- Engine Degreasing upon request (no additional charge)
- Bimini top cleaning and close up
The Marina staff can also upkeep your vessel with monthly routine detailing services, so if the mood strikes and the weather permits, as it often does here in southeast Texas during the "off-season," your boat will be ready to go on a moment's notice.
Our Monthly Detailing Subscription reduces the one-time cleaning cost from $12 per foot to just $10 per foot. Get on our schedule while we still have room!
However, if you are certain you will not be utilizing the vessel until next season, we offer the supplies you need to winterize the motor and prepare the vessel for hibernation. If you plan to tackle the job yourself (and we are fully confident you can do it ;-), we have the supplies you need!
Here are a couple of quick winterization tutorials to help you get through it:
Inboard Winterization
Outboard Winterization
Also, we are currently bulking up the Ship Store's selection of apparel, just in time for Christmas shopping. Colombia PFG short sleeve and Colombia PFG Long Sleeve Boating shirts just hit our shelves in 3 awesome colors, Stinger Yellow, Aqua Teal, and Hazy Grey.
Also, keep an eye out for the Hats, Beach Towels, and Basic T's. They will be in stock soon! Have a wonderful November. We wish you and your loved ones a very happy Thanksgiving. We'll see you at the Marina!

Club Lighting – November 30th
As the air turns crisp and the scent of pine fills the evening, our annual Club Lighting will transform Bentwater into a Christmas wonderland. Twinkling lights wrapped around every tree, and laughter spilling into the night, filling the sky with holiday spirit.
At the heart of the festival, Santa Claus himself will welcome families with his jolly laughter. His red suit and fluffy white beard will make every child's face light up with excitement, as they line up to share their wishes. Nearby, little ones can busily write their letters to Santa at an inviting craft station, confident that their dreams will soon take flight.
Adventurous souls join hayrides that meander through the neighborhood while cozied up under blankets of warmth.
For those seeking a unique experience, camel rides are always a highlight, with these gentle giants swaying gracefully as they parade along the route, drawing gasps of delight from onlookers.
A sight to behold, our ornament craft table offers creativity galore. Kids and parents alike will find joy in designing their unique ornaments while engaging in cheerful conversations.
Snack stations will fill the air with the tantalizing aroma of fresh-baked cookies awaiting decoration. Swirling colors of icing and an assortment of sprinkles make this a chocolaty adventure to remember.
Nearby, the tantalizing warmth of our s'mores station will greet everyone with melted marshmallows and chocolate sandwiches between graham crackers, inviting attendees to roast their own campfire treasures. This pairs perfectly with steaming cups of rich hot cocoa and freshly popped popcorn, both warming hands and hearts alike as children rush to refill for more.
Adding to the festive cheer, talented face painters wait to transform the kids into holiday characters, while balloon twisters spin colorful masterpieces that twinkle like holiday lights.
For the little ones, inflatables beckon—giggle-filled bounces surrounded by laughter.
As the day transfers to dusk, the infamous Grinch will make his sly entrance, creating playful mischief among the crowd. But quick to follow is our fun-loving DJ Gordy, who will fill the cool air with holiday classics and upbeat jams, getting even the Grinch to tap his foot.
This year's Club Lighting will be an unforgettable celebration, bringing joy, laughter, and warmth to all who attend. It is a reminder of the simple pleasures and the spirit of togetherness, shared over cocoa, stories, and the glowing glow of friendship. Here's to the holidays—a time to create memories that sparkle brighter than the first star of Christmas!
As always, we thank you for being part of our community. Wishing you a month filled with gratitude, celebrations, and the joy of togetherness.
Warm Regards,
Kam Brewer

Golf Course Maintenance Newsletter - Turf Talk with Scott Terry - November 2024
I am excited for the opportunity to lead an already talented team as your Director of Agronomy. With over 29 years of experience working with high-end private and resort-style courses, I aim to add value to your golfing experience. When I drove my wife around the course for her blessing, she responded, "This feels like home," as we both grew up in the piney woods of Jacksonville, Texas. Coming from the flat West Houston landscape, we love the majestic pines and elevation changes on all three courses. All the members I have met so far seem friendly and have a deep love for the Club and a passion for the game.
Looking Ahead
Under my leadership the agronomy team is set to make several exciting improvements in the months ahead.
Plans include:
- A focus on sustainable practices, such as reducing water usage and applying more eco-conscious maintenance techniques.
- Continuous evaluation and enhancement of course conditions to ensure year-round excellence.
- Ongoing collaboration with the golf operations team to ensure that the course meets the needs of our players, from casual golfers to seasoned professionals.
It's that time of year when soon the weather will send the turf in slow to dormant mode and the cart traffic will continue to weaken the canopies without the chance of improving until May. Please pay attention and avoid wear areas as they can get compacted causing thin weedy turf.
It is important for homeowners to apply a low nitrogen fertilizer to their lawns this month. I always recommend an application in the spring and fall but if you only do one, make it the fall application. It is important to strengthen the plant roots and allow them to store the needed nutrients for our brief Texas-style winter. This will help with spring green up when the soil temperatures are warmer. Once applied and watered, watering can be limited until next spring to help avoid lawn diseases such as brown patch in the St. Augustine or Zoysia.
I want to thank you for your continued support of the agronomy team, and we look forward to an exciting new chapter as we maintain and improve the quality of your playing experience. Keep filling in those divots and thanks for Taking Care of Your Course.
