December 2024 Club Newsletter

img

Dear Members,

As 2024 draws to a close this month, I want to express our tremendous gratitude for you.  Our members are what makes Bentwater so special, and it is all the more evident during the holiday season. We greatly appreciate all those who contributed to the Employee Christmas Fund this year.  This great Club tradition of generosity is a true blessing for our hardworking staff members and helps to make their Christmas season merry and bright. When I think about the great traditions we enjoy throughout the year, December's holiday traditions are always at the top of the list.  Whether it's rounding up the kids and joining Santa for his favorite meal of the year at Breakfast with Santa or enjoying a romantic dinner with your spouse at the Club's annual Candlelight Dinner, some of our most cherished memories are made between now and New Year's Eve.  Speaking of New Year's Eve, our event team has an absolutely incredible Bash in store for you.  This year's theme is "Fire & Ice," and Chef has some fun surprises in store.  T. Cole and the Austin Party Band will be back again this year by popular demand.  The food & drinks will be flowing, and the party won't stop until we have officially ushered in 2025.  Be sure to take a moment today to make your reservations.  You'll find full details in the Dining & Social newsletter, below.

Although we haven't experienced much chilly weather this season, there is something about this time of year that invites us to cozy up to a roaring fire with a favorite beverage and a good book.  But with so much happening at the Club, it's hard to stay cooped up too long.  December's Club calendar is as busy as ever with something for everyone in the family to enjoy.  Here's just a taste of what we have coming up:

  • Dec. 5th - Candlelight Dinner at the Country Club
  • Dec. 6th & 7th -  The Golf Shop Christmas Open House at Grand Pines and the Country Club
  • Dec. 11th - Up in Smoke BBQ Night at the Country Club
  • Dec. 14th - Breakfast with Santa at the Country Club
  • Dec. 17th - Wing Night at the Country Club
  • Dec. 18th - Ugly Sweater Tennis & Pickleball Mixer at the Racquet Club
  • Dec. 19th - Christmas Karaoke at the Country Club
  • Dec. 20th - Family Dinner Night at the Country Club
  • Dec. 21st - Jingle Jog & Caroling at the Sports Club Parking Lot
  • Dec. 31st - New Year's Eve Bash at the Country Club

Finally, if you are like me, I always wait until the last minute to do my Christmas shopping. Not to say I procrastinate, but I just don't want to miss any of the great sales. If I'm speaking your language, I highly encourage you to check out the Golf Shop's Christmas Open House later this week. It's a great opportunity to cross some things off your Christmas list.  They have an excellent selection of apparel, golf gear, and accessories in stock, or by special order. And if you're just not sure what to get for someone on your list, you can never go wrong with a gift certificate from Sanctuary Salon & Spa or the Golf Shop.  They make the perfect stocking stuffers!

Thank you very much for your continued support of the Club. I hope you and your loved ones have a safe and relaxing holiday and a very Merry Christmas.

Respectfully,

Mike Hoelzer, CMAA, PGA

Fire & Ice is the theme, and our event team has one of the best NYE parties we've ever had on tap and ready to cap off 2024 in style.  Enjoy great live music by T. Cole & The Austin Party Band, incredible food, your favorite drinks, and dance the night away until the big ball drops, and we welcome 2025 with a champagne toast at the stroke of midnight.  View full details, the menus, and make your reservations today at the link shown below!

Golf Club Newsletter - December 2024 - Dave Troyer, Director of Golf

img

Dear Members,img

As the year comes to a close, we want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to each of you for making 2024 such a memorable year of golf at Bentwater and Grand Pines. Despite the chill in the air, there is still plenty of great golf to be played this winter. December is also a time of celebration, reflection, and planning, so keep an eye out for upcoming events, holiday gatherings, and exciting updates on what's to come in the new year.  Here is what you need to know from the Golf Department this month:

News from the Golf Shop

As you have likely noticed, the Golf Shop is undergoing a full-blown renovation and a temporary Golf Shop has been setup in the Oak Room, located in the Country Club's breezeway.  Although we are all very excited about the project, the Annual Christmas Open House Sale is going to feel a little cramped.  With the limited space, we won't be able to display all of our merchandise. We know many of you have Golf Shop credit that needs to be spent before the end of the year, so if you don't see something you want in the Shop, make sure to ask the staff.  We have merchandise in storage that we can easily pull out for you.  We can also special-order items to help you make the best use of your available credit.

Mark the following dates on your calendar and come out to enjoy a fun shopping experience complete with our discounting dice game and holiday sweet treats:

Are you looking for a unique Christmas gift for a loved one?  Consider the gift of golf.  All of the Professionals on staff offer Gift Certificates for any of their instructional offerings.  From individual lessons, to a package of lessons, to playing lessons, our team has you covered to help that special person learn the game or improve their current game.

Etiquette Tip of the Month

Now that it is December, it is extremely important to remember that the Golf Courses are in a fragile state throughout the entire winter and into the early Spring.  With the cooler temperatures, the grass is in a dormant state and has no ability to recover from the damage caused by cart traffic.  Believe it or not, the compaction caused by golf cart traffic is the #1 most detrimental thing that contributes to poor conditions.  Everyone wants great conditions, so one of the best ways to help the courses come out of winter in good shape is to have EVERYONE practice proper Golf Cart Etiquette and follow the Daily Cart Rules whether it be Cart Path Only, or 90 degrees on and off the cart paths.

If you are unfamiliar with Bentwater's Golf Cart Usage policy, the expectations that the Club has of every member when using a Golf Cart to play golf is as follows:

Cart Usage Policy

Cart traffic is the number one cause of damage to golf courses.  It is our policy to restrict motorized golf cart traffic when weather or turf conditions warrant.  This policy ensures that we can continue to provide the best possible playing conditions by preventing damage to the courses.

Course management reserves the right, and has sole discretion, to restrict all cart traffic in instances when moisture, excessive heat, new or dormant turf, or any other weather related, or maintenance related conditions create situations where cart traffic would create additional damage to the courses.

When the golf courses are designated as 90-degree rule, players must exit the cart path at 90-degrees and return to the cart path after completing their shot.  Players must comply with the following rules when the courses are not designated as Cart Path Only:

  • Carts must remain 30+ yards away from all green complexes and tee boxes
  • Carts must remain on the cart path on all Par 3's
  • Carts may not be driven in any of the following areas:
    • Any roped off areas
    • Penalty areas
    • In or within 10 yards of all bunkers
    • Sloped areas
    • Low or soggy areas
    • Out of Bounds or in property owner's yards

For those of you who want to go the extra mile to help protect the conditions, consider pairing up in your private carts when you go out to play with your friends.  Two carts per foursome produces significantly less damage than four carts in a foursome.

Rule of the Month

Rule 19.3:  Relief Options for Unplayble Ball in Bunker

For many players, just the mention of having to play a shot out a bunker sends chills up their spine.  While there are times that a player may encounter an unplayable ball in a bunker (plugged in a steep face, etc), what most players don't know is that a player can declare their ball unplayable anywhere on the golf course, except a penalty area, in order to get themselves out of a tough situation.  So whether you find your ball in an unplayable situation, or you just don't want to attempt to hit it out of a bunker, the Rules of Golf give you two options for relief under Rule 19.3.

Rule of the Month: Rule 19.3 – Relief Options for Unplayable Ball in Bunker

a. Normal Relief Options (One Penalty Stroke)

When a player's ball is in a bunker:

  • The player may take unplayable ball relief for one penalty stroke under any of the options in Rule 19.2, except that:
  • The ball must be dropped in and come to rest in a in the bunker if the player takes either back-on-the-line relief (see Rule 19.2b) or lateral relief (see Rule 19.2c).

b. Extra Relief Option (Two Penalty Strokes)

As an extra relief option when a player's ball is in a bunker, for a total of two penalty strokes, the player may take back-on-the-line relief outside the bunker under Rule 19.2b.

img

If you have any questions or comments, please let me know at [email protected]. I would encourage everyone to download the USGA Rules of Golf App.  It is a great way to learn and reference the rules of golf at any time.

Have a Merry Christmas Season, and as always, remember to rake the traps, fill your divots, fix your ball marks, and post all your acceptable scores to GHIN. We look forward to seeing you at the Club!

imgI can hardly believe 2024 is almost over! As we wind down the year, I'd like to take a moment to reflect on everything we have to be thankful for. Here are just a few highlights from my long list of gratitude:

  • 2024 marked my first full year at Bentwater.
  • Getting to know so many wonderful members during my 18 months here.
  • The countless fun events we hosted this year and the joy of seeing so many of you participate.
  • The successful launch of the NHIPL league, with three teams already competing.
  • The incredible success of our new "First Pickle" pathway for learning pickleball.
  • The introduction of the Men's Interclub Racquets Mixers.
  • The addition of Ladies' Tennis Open Play on Saturday mornings.
  • A record-breaking year for our lesson and clinic program—the best since 2017!

And last, but certainly not least, I'm incredibly grateful for my dedicated team Joseph Mahaffey, Head Racquets Professional, and Mary Simpson, Pickleball Instructor.

Looking ahead, I'm excited to continue building on our successes in 2025 and creating even more reasons to be thankful.

  CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR NHIPL TEAMS!

The North Houston Interclub Pickleball League (NHIPL) has wrapped up its second season, and we are thrilled to announce that one of our Bentwater teams, the Shakers & Bakers, claimed the league title both seasons. What an incredible achievement!

Of course, we are equally proud of our other two teams, who competed fiercely and represented Bentwater with exceptional sportsmanship and fair play.

For those unfamiliar with NHIPL, it is the only interclub pickleball league serving the North Houston area. The league was co-founded by our own Director of Racquets, George Schuldberg, and Maxx Diamond of Elkins Lake. In its inaugural season, NHIPL brought together five teams, including two from Bentwater. By the second season, it grew to ten teams—three of which hailed from Bentwater.

Although the league's ultimate goal is to establish multiple levels of competition, its early seasons combined all teams into a single flight. This created a highly competitive "open-level" division, making our teams' spirited performances all the more impressive.

Looking ahead, NHIPL plans to expand and introduce multiple divisions to provide more evenly matched competition. This will give every team a better opportunity to shine as champions.

If you are interested in joining an NHIPL team, please contact George.

Congratulations to all our NHIPL players! We are so proud of your dedication and success:

NCWTL Fall Season Recap

img

The North Country Women's Tennis League wrapped up its Fall Season on November 21. This season, 70 Bentwater ladies competed across six teams, representing divisions from Champ to C2. Over 14 weeks of intense weekly matches, our players gave it their all on the courts.

Although we didn't bring home any division titles this season, our ladies exemplified grace, focus, and impeccable sportsmanship throughout the competition.

League play will resume in January for the Winter/Spring session. Best of luck to all our ladies as they take to the courts once again in the new season!

The ball machine can be reserved through the Bentwater CourtReserve system for $15 per use. For avid users, we're introducing unlimited monthly memberships at $50/month for individuals, or a year-long unlimited use membership at $199/year for individuals.

Yearly: $199 (individual)

Monthly: $50 (individual)

Daily: $15/per use

Clean Courts

In order to keep the courts clean for the next member, please make it a habit to do a lap around the court before you leave and pick-up all tennis balls, personal items, and trash.  You can place tennis balls in the bins located around the courts or take them to the Front Desk inside the Sports Club.

Ball Machine

When you are finished using the ball machine, please put all of the tennis balls back into the machine before putting the machine away.  We recycle tennis balls and eventually donate them to local schools and animal shelters, so your effort here is greatly appreciated.

Racquet Club Etiquette

While on Racquet Club premises, during league matches or other official match play, whether it be tennis or Pickleball, please respect the players by switching all mobile devices to silent mode.   Thank you.

 Marina Newsletter - December 2024

img

I hope you've been able to take advantage of the fantastic weather we've been having this fall. It's not always this warm and beautiful as we usher in the holiday season. This is typically the time of year that we do any needed renovations or facility improvements around the Marina. One of those upcoming improvements is a complete makeover of the old Marina storage area located by the Boat Launch.  We have begun construction on a new storage facility and a privacy fence that will surround it.  This will further enhance the area adjacent to the Boat Launch, which has transformed over the past couple of years into a much more inviting park-like setting.

We do expect winter to show up at some point, so getting your boat ready for hibernation is important. A good boat detail and winterization will make life a lot easier this spring when you're ready to put your watercraft back into regular use. Everything you need to winterize your boat is sold here at the Ship Store for your convenience. Get out and take advantage of this extended boating season, but make sure you set your appointment this month for a good cleaning, so you won't have to worry about it leading up to Christmas and New Years.

Last month we featured a couple of videos on winterizing both outboard and inboard motors.  This month's video is for all of our great pontoon boat owners.  Pontoon boats are among the most common boats you'll see out on Lake Conroe, and they come with their own particular needs when it's time for winter storage.  Enjoy:

Don't forget, the Ship Store offers a great selection of apparel for our boaters and anglers.  Colombia PFG short sleeve and Colombia PFG Long Sleeve boating shirts just hit our shelves in 3 awesome colors, Stinger Yellow, Aqua Teal, and Hazy Grey. Come cross a few Christmas gifts off the list.

img

Also, keep an eye out for the Hats, Beach Towels, and Basic T's. Have a great month and Merry Christmas! We'll see you at the Marina!

Kayaking is a great way to explore the areas that many boats can't get into for fishing or to just enjoy the peaceful scenery.

And if exercise is what you're looking for, you'll be having so much fun you won't even notice all the calories you're burning.  Rent a Kayak at the Ship Store.  It's the best way to explore Lake Conroe!

$35 for a ½ day rental and $60 for a full day rental, call the Ship Store to RSVP at 936-597-2556.

We're not fooling around this April. We are serious and mean business!

Gas is at $3.76! WOW, don't wait around at those prices. Come by and fill up!

Stop into the Ship Store while you are here and check out all of our Merchandise and Lake Gear. We offer an array of Maintenance products from Oil and Trim Fluid to Funnels and Zip Ties. For apparel we have Bentwater Marina Logoed T-Shirts in 3 different colors, Bentwater Marina Logoed Colombia PFG Shirts in 2 different colors, and a selection of Life Jackets for Adults, Children, and Infants. Cool off with a cold beverage or enjoy a sweet snack, we are currently stocked with Chips, Beef Jerky, Candy, Soda, and of course Ice Cold Beer! OH SNAP! My surf rope just broke, come on in. We have 16' T- Grip surf ropes and 60' 3 Passenger Tow Ropes. Why call it a day when things don't go right? The Marina may have what you need to get back out on the Lake!

Golf Course Maintenance Newsletter - Turf Talk with Scott Terry - December 2024

img

As we wrap up the year, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the progress made and share a few updates on the course. This has been an exciting first month to access the property and get future plans in place.

Unseasonably Warm November

November brought us some surprisingly mild and dry weather, which allowed for extended play and additional maintenance opportunities. The warmer conditions helped us complete several tasks that will set the course up for success in the coming year. The forecast predicts a warmer and drier winter but Texas is always full of surprises.

Tree Work Enhancements

A key focus this fall has been tree work on the Weiskopf and moving to the Miller next year. By selectively removing or trimming certain trees, we've improved sunlight penetration, enhanced air movement, and opened vistas that elevate the overall aesthetics of the course. These changes not only promote healthier turf conditions but also contribute to a more enjoyable playing environment.

Traffic Control

As you may have noticed, on most of the par 4's and 5's there is a white line painted across the fairway in front of the green complexes, indicating where carts should return to the cart path as you approach the green. These lines are used in lieu of signage to help maintain a clean look out on the course and eliminate the nuisance signs can cause our maintenance team. With the volume of cart traffic our courses experience, cooperation from our golf members is crucial to protect the playing areas.  Most of the shots played are approximately 40 yards from the green and not favorable for heavy cart traffic. Thank you in advance for doing your part to keep conditions playable.

Looking Ahead

On behalf of the entire Agronomy Team, I want to wish you and your family a happy and healthy holiday season. Thank you for your continued support, and we cant wait to see you out on the course in the new year! Keep filling those divots and thanks for taking care of your courses.
