February 2025 Club Newsletter
Dear Members,
As February gets underway and we enter this final stretch of winter, there's always a little uncertainty in the air. Will it freeze again? Is there more snow on the way? How much golf, tennis, or pickleball will we get to enjoy this month? February always keeps us guessing. One thing is certain though: the Club's event calendar comes alive in February, and it's punctuated by a very important day for our couples. We're looking at you men! Between the Spa's special Valentine's treatments, the Golf Shop's Valentine's Sale, Couples Yoga at the Fitness Center, and of course, the Grille's Valentine's Day Prix Fixe Dinner, it's hard to mess this one up. The Club has you covered, and you'll find full details for all of it in this month's newsletter.
In addition to the exciting year of events and activities we have in store for you and your family, 2025 will be underscored by an emphasis on staff training across all Club departments and disciplines. With feedback and insight gained from the monthly Club experience surveys that you have likely participated in, the staff is establishing and implementing enhanced service standards that are intended to deliver the best possible country club experience to our members and guests. You should begin to see the benefits of these training efforts in the days and weeks to come.
I will also be providing you with updates on capital projects and improvements made to the Club throughout the year. One of the most exciting projects currently underway is at our Racquet Club. The new Pickleball Court Complex is taking shape nicely and will soon become a hub of daily activity, competition, and social interaction for our Racquet Club community to enjoy. We will continue to provide you with updates as this new amenity approaches completion. Another area of the Club that has benefited from significant redesign over the past 18 months is the Villas. These fantastic guest accommodations exist for your convenience when hosting overnight guests and out-of-town relatives throughout the year. Villas can be booked for individuals or groups by stopping by the Country Club front desk. You can also call or email the Villa staff at 936-597-6219 or [email protected].
Finally, if you haven't already, I encourage you take a moment today to add the Bentwater Mobile App to your phone or tablet. It's the fastest, easiest way to stay up-to-date with everything the Club offers throughout the year. You'll find it in the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store for Androids. Just search for "Bentwater on Lake Conroe."
Thank you for your continued support of the Club and our staff. Have a wonderful February and I look forward to seeing you at the Club.
Respectfully,
(Click on the title of each section to open & close)

Rule of The Month
Most months I like to provide both an Etiquette Reminder and a Rule of the Month segment to my Newsletter. This month, however, both segments intersect. Most golfers have a general idea how they should behave on the golf course, but very few actually know that the expectations of a Player's conduct is actually written in the Rules of Golf! Rule 1.2a Conduct Expected of All Players reads as follows:
All players are expected to play in the spirit of the game by:
- Acting with integrity – for example, by following the Rules, applying all penalties, and being honest in all aspects of play.
- Showing consideration to others – for example, by playing at a prompt pace, looking out for the safety of others, and not distracting the play of another player. If a player plays a ball in a direction where there might be a danger of hitting someone, they should immediately shout a warning, such as the traditional warning of "fore."
- Taking good care of the course – for example, by replacing divots, smoothing bunkers, repairing ball-marks, and not causing unnecessary damage to the course.
There is no penalty under the Rules for failing to act in this way, except that the Committee may disqualify a player for acting contrary to the spirit of the game if it finds that the player has committed serious misconduct.
"Serious misconduct" is player behavior that is so far removed from what is expected in golf that the most severe sanction of removing a player from the competition is justified.
While it is hard to disqualify a player from a casual round of golf with friends, the Rules of Golf give the Committee the opportunity to set its own standards of player conduct and impose penalties other than disqualification in a Code of Conduct adopted as a Local Rule. This is something that the Committee will be researching and assessing as a possibility to add to the current Local Rules.
If you have any questions or comments, please let me know at [email protected]. I would encourage everyone to download the USGA Rules of Golf App. It is a great way to learn and reference the rules of golf at any time.
Have a great month, and as always, remember to rake the traps, fill your divots, fix your ball marks, and post all your acceptable scores to GHIN. We look forward to seeing you at the Club!

Racquet Club Newsletter - February 2025
January brought some challenging weather for tennis and pickleball enthusiasts. However, we made the most of the sunny days and managed to fit in our Ladies Play Day just before rains arrived.
Exciting progress is happening on our new pickleball facility! The site is currently under construction, with forms and groundwork underway as electricians begin laying conduit for the court lights and power systems. Once that step is complete, final grading and compaction will follow, and a vapor barrier will be installed. Concrete pouring will come next, requiring a minimum curing period of 30 days. Afterward, we'll be one step closer to enjoying brand-new courts.
Watching the daily progress, I'm struck by how expansive the new courts will be. With generous spacing between courts and fences, players can look forward to an unobstructed and enjoyable experience. I can't wait for the moment we hit the first pickleballs on these new courts!
Due to the unpredictable February weather and the temporary court space limitations during construction, we've decided to forgo special events for the month. However, many ongoing programs are still available, and we're planning some fantastic special events in March.
Please review the details in this newsletter and make plans to join us!

FROM THE RACQUET CLUB
Clean Courts
In order to keep the courts clean for the next member, please make it a habit to do a lap around the court before you leave and pick-up all tennis balls, personal items, and trash. You can place tennis balls in the bins located around the courts or take them to the Front Desk inside the Sports Club.
Ball Machine
When you are finished using the ball machine, please put all of the tennis balls back into the machine before putting the machine away. We recycle tennis balls and eventually donate them to local schools and animal shelters, so your effort here is greatly appreciated.

Our "One Year to Change Your World" series of monthly health & wellness classes, clinics, and seminars continues this month with a focus on improving our joint & muscular flexibility. Join me (Kris Reinlie), to explore the "why's and how's" of making stretching a part of your everyday life. You'll come away with a plan you can follow and some tips and tricks for incorporating stretching into your daily routine. Then, on February 13th, it's our annual Valentine's Couples Yoga class with instructor Angie. She'll lead you and your partner through a series of yoga movements, poses, and stretches that will show you how to properly warm-up and safely increase flexibility in small increments over time. Best of all, you get to do it with a partner! Yoga with a partner adds a social aspect to the activity that helps to overcome the lack of patience we often have when stretching by ourselves. A big factor in increasing range of motion is being able to hold a series of stretches for the proper duration and when someone else is doing it with you it's much more likely you'll stick it out and hold through the stretch together. So join us and make a fun memory with a friend or loved one. There's no sign-up necessary, just show up and have fun.
You'll find full details for these classes and more below. Have a great month and I'll see you at the Fitness Center.

As we embrace the heart of winter, we hope this newsletter finds you warm and well. Each year when the winter months approach, we talk a lot about winterizing and protecting our boats while they're in storage during the off-season. But for many, boating season never ends. Lake Conroe offers a variety of boating adventures year-round, and fishing is at the top of the list. Fishing on Lake Conroe in February can be quite rewarding, as the winter months bring some excellent opportunities for anglers. Here are some tips and insights for fishing on Lake Conroe during this time of the year:
WHAT'S BITING?
1. Largemouth Bass: February is often a good time to target largemouth bass as they prepare for the spawn, which typically begins in late February to early March. Look for bass in deeper waters, especially near rocky structures, submerged trees, and creek channels. As the water warms, bass may move shallower. Use jerk baits, jigs, and soft plastics, especially in natural colors.
2. Crappie: Crappie fishing can be productive in February as they start to school up in preparation for their spawn. Target submerged structures, brush piles, and docks. They are often found at depths of 10 to 15 feet. Use small jigs or live minnows for the best results.
3. Catfish: Catfish can be caught year-round, and February is no exception. They tend to be more active in cooler water temperatures. Look for them in deeper areas of the lake, especially near the channels and drop-offs. Use cut bait, stink bait, or live bait to attract them.
4. Hybrid Striped Bass: These fish can be targeted in deeper waters, especially near the dam and in open water. Use live shad, swimbaits, or spoons to entice hybrid striped bass.
WHAT'S THE TRICK?
1. Slow Presentation: Fish tend to be less active in colder water, so a slower presentation is crucial. Consider using finesse techniques, such as drop-shotting or weightless Texas rigs.
2. Depth Changes: Focus on areas where there are significant depth changes, as fish will often hold near these transitions.
3. Water Temperature: Pay attention to water temperature, as bass and crappie will be more active when the water starts to warm slightly. Look for areas where the temperature is a bit higher, such as near the mouths of creeks or in shallow bays that receive sunlight.
WHERE TO?
1. The Dam Area: The deep water near the dam can be a great spot for hybrid striped bass and catfish.
2. Creek Channels: Areas near the mouths of creeks can be productive for bass and crappie as they move into spawn.
3. Brush Piles and Stumps: Look for man-made brush piles or natural structures where fish like to hide.
4. Marinas and Docks: Fishing around marinas and docks can yield good results for crappie and bass, especially under the docks.
While you are on the water, be sure to dress in layers, as temperatures can vary throughout the day. Early mornings can be pretty chilly out on the lake, but afternoons typically warm up nicely. Be patient and prepared for slower fishing; winter fishing often requires more time to locate active fish, but with the right techniques and locations, anglers can have a successful outing on the lake. Always remember to check local regulations and fishing reports before heading out. In fact, you can find the latest Lake Conroe fishing report on Bentwater.com's Marina Conditions page, and in this newsletter down below. So have a look, enjoy the fishing, and have a great month of February.

Golf Course Maintenance Newsletter - Turf Talk with Scott Terry - February 2025
With winter in full swing, the colder weather has finally sent the turf into its natural dormancy. This gives us the opportunity to focus on important maintenance projects that will benefit the course in months ahead. Hopefully, the hard winter blast we experienced toward the end of January will be kind to the turf and not set us back as in past years. Speaking of the winter blast, be sure to see the fun Snow Day photos from around the Club, below.
Current Projects
Currently, our team is working on repairing broken drainage systems on both the Weiskopf and Miller courses to ensure proper water flow and course playability. Additionally, we are conducting a thorough check of sand depths needed to maintain consistency and optimal playing conditions. A new sod cutter has been purchased, and we will begin leveling potholes and sunken irrigation lines on the Weiskopf to smooth out the fairway surfaces.
Preparing for Spring
Spring will be here before we know it and pre-emergent applications for summer weeds begin in late February for goosegrass and crabgrass control. Our industry's best chemistry for this application has had new golf course restrictions only allowing us to apply to twenty percent of our property per year. This will force us to use other products for other areas, but we have sound plans in place. The best weed control is a sound healthy turf stand. This starts with a good cultural plan as well as proper aerification. Our team is noticing a reduction in winter weed pressure on the driving range tee this season due to the recent aggressive fraze mowing that was performed last year. Something to be said for tearing the turf up occasionally.
Thanks to the Divot Crew
I would like to take a moment to extend my heartfelt thanks to our dedicated divot crew. I have inherited an organized program that I have seen fail in the past at other clubs. Your commitment to helping care for the course has a significant impact and ensures a great golfing experience for everyone. With many cart path only days during the off months the divots can get out of hand, and we appreciate your help. Crossing our fingers for an early green up this year and allowing us to get the course in shape for a warm season of golf play. Stay warm this month and thank you again for taking care of your course.
